BBC Charter Review: The Alternative Green Paper (online event) Tuesday 3 March 2026, 5-6.30pm The BBC Charter Review is a once-in-a-generation opportunity for the British public to debate and decide the BBC’s future. Yet the government’s consultation has been rushed, based on a Green Paper that is overly-complex and features concerning ideas for changing how the BBC is funded, how it is governed, and how it secures its independence from government. The ‘Alternative Green Paper’ is a collaborative project to put the public back at the centre of BBC Charter review, by collecting a wider range of ideas about reforming the BBC. At this launch event, we introduce contributions from audience groups, campaign organisations and media experts, and discuss how the crucial debates on the future of the BBC can be expanded beyond the limited options presented by the Government. The Alternative Green Paper allows us to consider new, transformative ways to create a more democratic, independent, better-governed and sustainable BBC. The event will be chaired by Lee Edwards, Professor of Strategic Communications and Public Engagement at the LSE and Chair of the Media Reform Coalition. Contributors to the Alternative Green Paper will give a three-minute summary of their ideas before we open the floor to discussion and suggestions for further proposals. The aim of the event is to enable presenters and audience to showcase, discuss and generate new ideas about the future of the BBC. We hope it will also inspire more contributions to the Alternative Green Paper, which will remain open to public contributions throughout the Charter review process this year.
