“They’re Trying to Silence Us”: Students, Faculty on Censoring Pro-Palestine Voices at Graduations

As colleges hold graduation ceremonies across the country, many schools are attempting to silence pro-Palestine speech at the commemorations, including canceling speakers and eliminating live speeches by students altogether. There will be no live student speakers at the City University of New York’s School of Law or at New York University’s school-specific ceremonies after former students gave speeches that included expressing support for Palestine and criticism of Israel. Rutgers University canceled biotech CEO Rami Elghandour’s commencement speech at its School of Engineering’s convocation, citing complaints about his social media posts on Israel and Palestine. And the University of Michigan’s president issued a public apology after professor Derek Peterson praised pro-Palestine students during his commencement address. “Our students are being told that your families, your Palestinian families, are expected to suffer and die, and you should be OK with it,” says Noura Erakat, a Palestinian human rights attorney and professor at Rutgers University. Erakat adds that Rutgers professors have been asked not to teach about the conditions in Gaza. “We are asked to betray the empirical record, including the one on genocide and apartheid, and we refuse to do that.” “This will be the third graduation and commencement ceremony in a row where we do not have a student speaker, we do not have a faculty speaker and we do not have a live-stream commencement,” says Shivani Desai, a member of CUNY Law Students for Justice in Palestine. “They took all of that away from us, and they took that away specifically because of Palestine repression.”

U.S. Renews Deportation Proceedings Against Palestinian Student Activist Mohsen Mahdawi

The U.S. Board of Immigration Appeals has reinstated deportation proceedings against Mohsen Mahdawi, a graduate student at Columbia University who was detained last April for his outspoken support for Palestinian rights. Mohsen is a green card holder who grew up in a refugee camp in the occupied West Bank. At Columbia, he served as co-president of the Palestinian Student Union and president of the Buddhist Association. In April of 2025, masked and hooded ICE agents detained him when he appeared for what he believed would be a naturalization interview in Vermont. He spent two weeks in ICE custody before a federal judge ordered his release. Click here to see our interviews with Mohsen Mahdawi.

Why Is Leqaa Kordia Still Jailed? Palestinian Protester Suffers Seizure After 11 Months Locked Up

YouTube

Words of NSW Police Deputy Commissioner #DavidHudson, 4th July 2025, spoken under oath during a NSW parliamentary inquiry:

“We can’t prevent the free movement of people throughout the city just because you’re in a protest. You can walk down the street, the footpath. Bearing in mind, at that particular protest at the town hall, there were a lot of women, children [and] women pushing prams. It’s not like we were going to put walls up and start boxing on with these people who have a right to protest.”

How things change in 7 months.

That's precisely what NSW police did last night at Sydney Town Hall, to another protest with people from all walks of life (including kids in strollers)—walls were put up, and police did indeed start 'boxing on', even if someone is backing away with their hands up, or kneeling on the ground in prayer, or already pinned to the ground with a knee in their back, or part of a large crowd kettled & unable to disperse (while police charge with pepper spray & horses, yelling "disperse or be arrested").

And the point at which the police first charged? Very soon after rally organiser #JoshLees had begun using a megaphone to encourage people to disperse (not that we could, due to police kettle in place).

Chris Minns, NSW Premier: "for the sake of Social Cohesion™, we're inviting a wanted war criminal from a rogue state to visit, granting police extraordinary emergency powers to forcefully suppress the expression of non-approved messages in non-approved locations, and installing extra Social Cohesion™ fences and barriers in the middle of the city. In order to ensure maximum Social Cohesion™ please don't come into the city, and if you do, then disobeying the instructions of one of the 3,000 Social Cohesion™ officers will result in a $5,000 fine. This is for your own good. You will cohere, or else."
