#Portland's first test of its new administration style will put it under #heatstress, but not, we hope, a trial by fire.

I haven't heard any news about #coolingshelters, in spite of the obvious fact that over 72 hours of excessive heat will cause deaths to the unhoused.

What stresses me is local governments' apparent inability to read a fucking forecast, and plan accordingly. Again.

It's a mere 96F out there and so pleasant compared to 110, 113. Today should be the last very hot day, 90s next week which will feel like fall. #pnwheatwave
We have a blazing (pun intended because the air is full of smoke from fires) heatwave here in the PNW, so this little piece seems appropriate. I used Murano striking red, striking orange and opaque red, a few slices of Millefiori cane, and my own custom frit mix of reds, pinks and purples. #pnwheatwave #heatwave2023 #hotglass #thatshot #🔥 #lampwork #torchwork #redglass #muranoglass #effetre #glassbeads #handmadeglass #artyoucanwear #christofmaupin #pastpresentarts #pnw #madeinoregon #salemoregon
113F today and that's the worst. Hopefully. Next 2 days are supposed to be a few degrees cooler and then the real cooldown begins Friday. Camping out downstairs where it's cooler, and my mom is gloating because she has a basement. #pnwheatwave
As Alberta's fires burn, plz remember our own fire season will feature extra fuels thanks to a wet winter/spring and they're drying out early thanks to the PNW heatwave. Review firewise landscape guidelines, get things in order, and this may be a good year to remove anything flammable near the house (like juniper). #firewise #wildfireprep #pnwheatwave

This pink rhody will be gorgeous for less than a week due to the #PNWHeatWave. The deadheading will hit all at once this year.

Hopefully the terrifying combination of
1) drought
2) midsummer
4) hot wind out of the East
3) heat dome centered right over #Oregon
won’t come to pass. If it does, guess we’ll need to switch to olives and figs.

Pretty rhododendron soldiering through the #PNWHeatWave in the shade and getting a morning sprinkle each day.

At least yesterday it remained below 90F and those horrible hot winds stayed away.

eating in a heatwave, part 1 - Dr. Orna Izakson

For the past couple of weeks I’ve had a song from the musical, Oklahoma!, stuck in my mind. It’s a song I think I’ve only heard once, maybe twice. But it’s absolutely been on repeat on my internal playlist. In the show, it’s about finding commonalities between the farmers and the cowboys. In my mind, […]

Note, too, that we’re coming out of a La Niña cycle — which, in the PNW, usually means cooler and wetter. We’re heading into an El Nño, which means hotter and dryer.

Plus, global warming/climate chaos. Plus wildfires.

This is why I get so aggro about people saying this is “nice” weather. It’s dangerous and deadly and going to get much, much worse.

NYT story from yesterday says 1) Portland’s heat yesterday broke a record set in 1973 and 2) this heat wave May see temps 30° above normal. I’d only seen that we’d be 20° above.

The Oregon coast, usually dozens of degrees cooler, is seeing temps above 90°. One friend reports 93° in Yachats. That is not normal.
