Archeologist Bruna Rocha denounces the absurdity of an anti-indigenous bill currently working its way through the Brazilian congress.
PL 490, the so called "time stamp" ('marco temporal') law, would restrict indigenous land claims to those territories occupied by a given people on or after 1988, when the current Brazilian constitution was ratified.
Archeological research has documented indigenous occupations in Brazil going back 12,000 years, with a 90% population crash associated with the arrival of Europeans, and a continous process of encroachment, displacement and genocide ever since.
