Steam Machine Alternative Build for ~£1199 using today's UK pricing with available parts:

https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/user/SimonZerafa/saved/#view=b4wbCJ

You'll need a Keyboard, Mouse, Monitor and Controller to complete this of course. None of those are supplied with the base Steam Machine.

This build will also be a lot more performant (more RAM and a better GPU) upgradable and customisable in the future.

Install SteamOS, Bazzite or CachyOS if you want a similar experience to the Steam Machine. These operating systems are free. A Windows 11 Pro Licence will cost around £30, if you want to go that route.

This is a white build, a black one might be slightly less expensive 🙂

TIL:

If your DDR5 DIMM modules have configurable RGB, then every time you reprogram the colours or pattern there is a non-zero chance to corrupt the SPD or other configuration information on the module.

This renders the module unable to train, even if the RAM itself is functional.

Maybe DIMM modules without RGB are the way to go? 🖖🤷‍♂️

Came into some money, my bottleneck has always been my graphics card and though this PC was top of the line once, it's time to upgrade. What's good these days?

Research has me constantly under pressure. I'm 2 years sober of alcohol, I stopped smoking 1 month and a half ago and I don't even drink coffee anymore, only tea, because I was drinking too much coffee. I needed something to decompress.

So I started playing video games. But this computer, although it has a RTX 5070 GPU, was built for machine learning development, not for gaming.

Yesterday I changed the CPU from a ryzen 5 7600X to a ryzen 7 9800X3D and games run smoothly since then. It cost a lot of money but I saved up by not smoking. It took me about 30 minutes to replace the CPU and it went without a hitch.

So now on evenings I force myself to stop doing research and I immerse myself in the universe of The Witcher 3.

Your motherboard is silently throttling your PCIe expansion cards: How to check your BIOS settings

You buy a premium graphics card or high-speed storage drive, plug it into the biggest physical connection on your system board, and assume you are getting maximum performance. According to a new hardware guide by XDA Developers, many PC motherboards are silently throttling these PCIe expansion cards through hidden BIOS settings and physical wiring limitations.

Radxa Orion O6 brings modular ARM computing to custom PC builders for $212

For decades, the custom PC building scene has been completely locked to the x86 architecture dominated by Intel and AMD. That monopoly is fracturing in 2026 as the Radxa Orion O6 hits the market. This new Mini-ITX motherboard allows enthusiasts to build a standard, modular desktop powered entirely by an open-source Armv9 processor. It runs
