宇宙空間に存在する炭素化合物のうち、約20%未満が「多環芳香族炭化水素(PAHs)」と呼ばれるベンゼン環が複数繋がった化合物の形で見つかります。その起源には議論があるものの、一般的には恒星の近くのような高温環境で生成したのではないかと考えられてきました。
