It is amazing how the oystercatcher finds the worm: the legs must have a very sensitive feeling for the movement of worms in the ground. Many waders pat the mud on the shore, perhaps getting the prey moving, but the oystercatchers just stand quietly in place until they hit their beaks deep into the soil. It is rarely possible to pull a worm up without it breaking...

The oystercatcher (Haematopus ostralegus) grows to a length of up to 45 cm and has a wingspan of up to 83 cm. It is mostly found in coastal areas. Its diet consists of insects, mussels, crabs and worms.
