"Can a hug lower your blood pressure?

Hugging releases oxytocin, the 'cuddle hormone' that promotes feelings of relaxation and bonding. This hormone can lower blood pressure, heart rate, and stress levels, making hugging a healthy way to reduce stress.

As Dr. Paul Zak says, "Hugs are a universal language of love and affection."

What's the most comforting hug you've ever received?

The article reports that elementary school girls show increased salivary oxytocin levels after participating in facilitated drum circles with friends, while circles with strangers do not produce the same oxytocin increase. Cortisol levels remained unchanged, and mood improvements were observed in the group with strangers.

Oxytocin’s role in social bonding and stress regulation makes this finding relevant to psychology by illustrating how social context can influence neuroendocrine responses to shared activities. The study highlights how preexisting relationships may shape biological responses to group interactions.
