I used a different computer to access work email, and now #Outlook365 thinks I've moved to Iceland or Liberia.
I'll double check, but I don't think my apartment crosses quite that many time zones.

Hi, #infosec people. I'm hoping you can help me with a thing with my job: I would like some resources to show to some decision makers, indicating that allowing sync clients for OneDrive (e.g., rclone, etc.) is basically OK and not the security nightmare the CIO believes it is. I believe most useful would be links to industry standards, statements by respected professionals in the field, etc. I don't think reasoning (even if it came from much more knowledgeable people) will carry any weight at all, unless it comes from a person or organization with recognized authority in this area, because that's how my admins work.
Context: When I asked to have a sync client authorized so I can synchronize my OneDrive files (for backup, offline work, etc.), this is the CIO's response:
The syncing of University data to non-University owned (.e.g personal) devices is not permitted. I know this adds a layer of difficulty to your process, but there are a few critical reasons why we maintain this posture:
- Data Loss Prevention: We cannot guarantee the backup or recovery of University files stored on personal hardware.
-Security Posture: On personal devices, we are unable to confirm or maintain essential security standards (like encryption levels or patch management) that protect our network from external threats.
- Compliance: Our data agreements require that University information remains within a managed and auditable environment.
More context: We (a small university) recently made the jarring switch from #google suite to #microsoft #office365, #outlook365, etc. We aren't being given licenses for actual desktop Office programs, and (lol) we are definitely not being offered institution-managed laptops.
#OneDrive is a bit of a workflow nightmare for doing basic file management stuff through the web interface, and the whole thing breaks down with iffy internet connections--which I often have. I also run #linux mint on my laptop, but I can manage that end of things.
Important: It's possible I'm wrong and sync does introduce all the security problems the CIO cited (above). Honestly, they don't make sense to me, but I'm not an #infosec professional; just a person want to my job to not be made more difficult. If the CIO is spitting straight truth and I just need to accept it, please tell me that.
Anyway, if you have links to any resources that might help make my case, I hope you will share them, or keywords I can search to find resources. Thanks a lot in advance.

Your honour, I present my next argument for why all Product Managers at #Microsoft should be shitcanned.
In #outlook365 there's a whole second set of settings from Settings. Your editor settings, with things like auto-correct options, are only accessible while you're drafting an email. And two menu levels down starting with the ... menu.
You either centralize an app's settings (iPhoneOS) or don't (Android), but at least pick a lane and stay in it.
