The Commission wants to remove the '5 % rule' for Baltic Sea fisheries - Stockholm University Baltic Sea Centre

The so-called '5 % rule' in the multi-annual management plan for the Baltic Sea ensures that fishing pressure is reduced if the biomass of the fish stock is too low. The European Commission now wants to remove this safeguard from the management plan.

Much to the fishers’ dismay, cod populations in the Baltic Sea have been decreasing since the 1990s. The reasons are many, including habitat degradation. The same decade also saw the start of a potential solution to habitat loss.
