J'ai des envies de Otherkind Dice.

I'd been skipping around sections while reading Moonlight on Roseville Beach to soak in the vibes, and finally finished the first section and read the rules, which felt familiar after playing an Otherkind Dice game last weekend. Today I watched this interview with Richard Ruane in which he cites Psi*Run. That was lucky timing on getting to play it, then, as I have a better idea how that dice system pushes stories forward, and how it'll work in a mystery-solving setting.

I got to play Psi*Run this weekend, which was a hoot, with @Alwaysnevers running. Amnesiac psis on the run from their mysterious captors, and whose powers can easily go out of control.

I didn't take that last bit into consideration when making my character. Psi powers are freeform and player-defined; since the other two players took visually impressive powers, I decided to try subtle by defining mine as "Lucky," something I could play off as a "What are you talking about, I don't have a power" kind of running gag. When it did go out of control, we played it as "too much of a good thing," e.g. trying to free another character from their seat restraints, their buckle fell apart in my hands... and so did some cable-bearing bolts on the suspension bridge we were on.

The game uses the Otherkind Dice method, which was easy to pick up and quickly revealed how it can be used to escalate the fiction's stakes or create new problems, while leaving control of what goes wrong up to the player rolling. That let us decide what repercussions we wanted to deal with in each moment, and eventually control the pacing. While working it out, we started the session by hesitantly using our powers, but ended on a bombastic action/escape sequence where letting them loose was the goal.

Lumpley Games has a great post about Otherkind Dice, including a link to Psi*Run's specific implementation: https://lumpley.games/2022/03/14/otherkind-dice/
