Somebody awesome from a German University showcased how they're enjoying the fruits of their micro-mapping labor in #OpenStreetMap by adding rooms locations in their calendar⁰, via #osmAPP ¹ links !

I love how they opted to use #osmAPP links, because it's browser-based, and platform agnostic, and good-looking, too

#OpenStreetMap is awesome, of course, but honestly, our main website is not the best way to showcase our data.

Personally, whenever I give out map links, I prefer to point them to #OsmAPP, either the direct POI (already mapped in OSM), or a random point I want to share.

If we're gonna give new folks their first interaction with OSM, we might as well make sure we're giving them an awesome experience, too.

@bestsoln We should move off #GoogleMaps…but not to #MapMyIndia.

The best map is made by the community and owned by the community - like #OpenStreetMap. The best software is transparent, monopoly-free, and respects the users’ software freedom - i.e. #FreedomRespecting / #libre / #opensource software, such as #CoMaps, #OsmAnd, #OsmAPP, #MapComplete, etc.

Instead of investing in yet another privately-owned platform, we should invest in the aforementioned.

MapMyIndia could have joined the hundreds of other companies who have built their maps atop #OSM data, allowing them to benefit from the collective investment and helping improve OSM for the rest of the world.

One of the participants said that having multiple apps is too complicated for the average person.

At that point, I…

  • had covered #CoMaps (with exercises to practice bookmarking things, editing bookmarks, browsing bookmarks, using the navigation, enabling the Metro layer, and using the search),
  • had gotten started with #iD,
  • and had mentioned #MapComplete to the complainant in response to a query of theirs.

In the heat of the moment I said that having one app that can do it all would become a pretty complicated one (just look at OsmAnd)…but is that really true if the UI is well-designed…?

#OsmAPP (osmapp.org) aims to be one such “universal app for OpenStreetMap”. I hope it can achieve its goals while still remaining tech-illiterate-friendly…

Today I had to share two GPS locations with people that most probably does not use #OpenStreetMap based maps or apps. Because of the really low support for the geo: URL scheme https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Geo_URI_scheme, this means that the best way to provide a link is with a GMaps link :(((

I found the #OSMApp https://osmapp.org/ can provide links for several maps providers. I find this app more and more useful.

@mgorny Editing OSM on mobile, with ID, is a PITA.

I have multiple apps on my phone, but the most often for these are: @everydoor , and #SCEE ¹ (the #StreetComplete fork for experienced OSM users), and occasionally , Osm Go! ², depending on the element I'm trying to edit.

For casual, or non-OSM users, I usually recommend #OsmAPP in-browser (where they can suggest changes, rather than make the edits themselves)

#OsmAPP is becoming a very user-friendly front-end for #OpenStreetMap. Kudos to their very nimble team!

For example, without having to learn #Overpass, from the searchbox, anyone can simply search for "wikipedia=* to find features tagged with wikipedia=*

Or, maybe finding nearby emergency shelters.

These days I use them a lot as a way of sharing a location to other people, rather than a link coming from OSM itself, or any other mapping platform.

#geoURI is actually supported!
