SPHEREx mapping of diffuse PAH and H II emission in the Galactic plane: https://arxiv.org/abs/2603.23620 -> "Since its launch in early 2025, the #SPHEREx space telescope has been conducting an all-sky near-infrared spectral survey from 0.75 to 5.0 microns. We produce a large-scale map of the 3.3-micron #PAH emission feature, which is bright and detectable throughout the Galactic plane, and find a strong correlation with the thermal dust radiance measured by Planck." (The image shows the #OrionNebula in special false colors explained in the ALT text.)

Size does matter! On the left is the old ball head, which always made me wonder why the camera was shaking and I couldn't focus on a subject. On the right is the new one, and now I understand why. Now I managed to capture Orion in the frame – my first ever image of the #orionnebula

- 29 minutes of exposure
- My wife's Pentax K30 (€0)
- 70-210mm f/3.5 lens (€20 from eBay)
- #barndoortracker (approx. €100)

One exciting thing about winter is the Orion constellation is back and so is the Great Orion & Running Man nebulae!

This time I wanted to get a nice wide shot of them and their surroundings so I did a 4-panel mosaic. The mosaic has a mean of 2.5 hours per panel and there is nearly 10 hours of data here! Next year I'll add even more data!

I'm adding another two panels to get NGC 1999 as well and the data is fantastic. I just have to finish my final process of it.

Acquisition:
⏱️ 9.900 hours captured over 3 nights (mean of 2.475 hours per panel)
🌌 Orion Nebula (M42), Running Man Nebula (Sh 2-279)
🔭 Askar 71F (Scope), SkyWatcher GTi (Mount)
📸 Player One Ares-C Pro (Main Cam), ZWO 120MM Mini (Guide Cam), Optolong L-Quad Enhance (Filter)
📅 Bloomington, MN (Bortle 8) from 12/2025 to 01/2026

Processing info:
Images captured and processed by me. Everything is calibrated using 50 darks, 20 flats (per night), and 50 biases. Stacked and edited with PixInsight. Mosaic stitched with Siril

The Orion Nebula (M42) from last night, in between clouds and a bright Moon washing out everything.

Haven't done any "prettifying" on this to turn it into art, but as imaging data I kind of like it like this. Science!

Orion Nebula (2022), captured from our terrace in the middle of the city with a Sky‑Watcher Newtonian telescope + Canon EOS 5D Mark III full‑frame cam. Pleased with how much detail came through despite urban light pollution. #orionnebula #graz #astrophotography #skywatcherusa #geoscience
