Any 1974 OD&D players tried modifying damage in a different way to later supplements and editions?
I though it might work to have damage a character deals be their current hit points, rather than 1d6.
In this way character injuries are reflected in their effectiveness, and it would incentivise healing, or rest for some added gritty realism.
Surely this simple hack has been tried before?

In the mid-70s, I found D&D. That led me to a year working at TSR and a career in Silicon Valley. I made games with EA and became a TD, was a senior engineer and manager for Adobe, consulted, got an MBA, and worked for Amazon before retiring and living off the fat of the land.
