Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners

Today I decided to leave the sweet potatos in the ground a little longer. The leaves were still green and healthy enough to pump some more sugars into the tubers 🌱

Dug up some normal potatos instead!

Today I'm harvesting the sweet potato's. This is my first season growing them and I'm curious about how many will come out of the soil! I'm growing them in my greenhouse between the tomatos. They seem to get along fine.

When I remove some of the top of the soil it looks promising...

Will keep you informed.

“Certified organic farmland in the U.S. still represents less than 1 percent of the country’s 880 million acres of farmland, according to the USDA. Of this, 17 percent is in California, which continues to expand its organic acreage. In Monterey County, it’s 15 percent.

"According to the Agricultural Commissioner’s annual crop report [https://www.countyofmonterey.gov/home/showpublisheddocument/132827/638596511396300000], Monterey County had 95,475 acres dedicated to organic production in 2023, representing a 17-percent increase from the year before and a 186-percent increase from a decade earlier.”
