2025 #UraniumFilmFestival - #Taiwaste

Germany / Taiwan, 2022, Director: Patrik Thomas, Producer: The Random Collective, Arthouse Fiction/Satire, Chinese, English subtitles, 25 min.

"As nuclear powered country, Taiwan is constantly facing the issue on how to deal with its nuclear waste. In the late 1970s, Taiwans government decided to store parts of its nuclear waste on #OrchidIsland, 65km off Taiwan’s southeast coast, home of the #Yami people who lived for centuries as an isolated tribe. Being tricked by the government, the tribal chief signed a contract to built a 'fish cannery', which turned out to be a #NuclearWaste storage site. Now, after more than 30 years of protest by the Yami people, the government has a new plan: Every Taiwanese citizen who is using electricity is responsible for the nuclear waste produced and has to store it at home."

One more promising source of #energy in #Taiwan should be #biogas. The main reason for this is the fact that sorting waste is kind of a national sport in Taiwan, and there is no lack of food waste, from banquets, night markets and the likes.
#nuclearenergy is the very definition or #irresponsible, #nonsustainable hubris on behalt of mankind: There still is NO solution for #nuclearwaste, so we should refrain from adding to the existing pile!

Poor #OrchidIsland and Tao tribe!

If verified, the 213mph / 343kph wind gust on #OrchidIsland, #Taiwan, on Wednesday evening might be the 3rd fastest measured wind speed ever recorded on the Earth's surface, only exceeded by the 253mph / 407kph wind on Barrow Island, Australia in 1996, and the 231mph / 372kph wind on Mount Washington, USA in 1934.

The Highest Anemometer-Measured Wind Speeds on Earth

From California to New Hampshire, and from Greenland to the Caribbean, here's a look at the strongest wind gusts ever confirmed on planet Earth.

As the rest of #Taiwan awaits the #landfall of #Typhoon #Koinu on Thursday, #OrchidIsland just recorded the fastest #gust speed in Taiwan's meteorological history: the anemometer read 95.2m/s (185kts / 213mph / 343kph) before it was damaged by the strong winds.

How a Nuclear Dump in Taiwan Created a Generation of Activists

For members of a Taiwanese tribe, a waste site on their island serves as a painful reminder of the government’s broken promises, and a symbol of their long struggle for greater autonomy.
