Congratulations to the newly appointed members of the #ORCID Researcher Advisory Council (ORAC)!

We'd like to introduce Leonardo Candela of the National Research Council of Italy who will serve his first two-year term beginning in March.

Voice assistants ought to be like Orac from Blake's 7; rude but helpful, mostly harmless. LLM chatbots with text-to-speech-to-text are exactly the opposite; polite but unreliable, and often harmful.

If you want prophetic, there's the '#minisec' from Arthur C. Clarke's 1975 novel _Imperial Earth_.

And of course #Orac from #Blakes7 in 1978.

Possibly only Kerr Avon truly twigged that all of the processing power was in the key and the big perspex box with the Christmas tree lights was a glorified base station with the PSU and speaker and simply camouflage for the most part.

Orac's key is now realizable as a #RaspberryPi with a 'modular' case from PiHut — I have one. It's the size and appearance of the BBC prop, connects to other computers wirelessly ('Tariel cells'), and has analogue audio output.

The popular #SciFi gadget that we don't have is the '#commlock' from #Space1999 in 1974. Unlike Orac, we have the technology to make full ones today. I suspect that they would go down a storm at SciFi conventions if someone set them up with a LAN, local videoconferencing, and electronic tickets/calendars.

One #RaspberryPi has arrived. It is in one of the PiHut's "modular cases". One of these: https://thepihut.com/products/modular-raspberry-pi-4-case-clear I am resisting the temptation to give it the hostname "Orac". Mind you, it does resemble Orac's key more than Orac itself. It's even approximately the right size. It's a U.K. company. They must know what it looks like, ne? #Blakes7

Put a face on a bag of spanners and people think it's alive.
No face and 'a brain the size of a planet' - not alive.

Google has Tensor Processing Units for running machine learning.

I've watched enough Blake's 7 to know that Orac is probably in development.

"Orac's abilities mainly revolved around its abilities to instantaneously access the tarial cells of other computers and either access information or control them remotely. "

Orac (episode)

Orac was the thirteenth and final episode of Series A of Blake's 7 first broadcast in 1978. Its cliffhanger, the apparent destruction of the Liberator, would be resolved in the first episode of Series B Redemption. From the VHS release: Blake and his crew go on a life-saving mission to the planet Aristo, where they must stop Orac, a highly advanced computer, falling into the Federation's hands. But Servalan and Travis have located it too, and Blake is caught in a race against time to save...

Triphala has a much higher ORAC than its constituent ingredients, and I don't like that.

Is it an artifact of the test we use to determine ORAC? Is it the result of a secondary compound produced by the combination in response to oxidation? Is it just some mistake a chemist made years ago that people never tried to reproduce? WHY!?

Makes me regret eschewing chemistry in favor of more pure things. I didn't appreciate how much of modern life is chemistry / math is seductive af 😭

Just finished rewatching Series 1 of Blake's Seven 💫, and Orac appears in the final episode ... though I'm sure his voice changed later on. Also he appears to have 4 USB slots (?) which was good in 1978.

If you can overlook cheap sets and props and that it's a bit "Shakespeare in Space", there's a lot of good things. Paul Darrow (Avon) and Jackie Pearce (Servelan) both magnificent. Stephen Greif (Travis, in S1) too.
