If you use #OpenTripPlanner #Valhalla or #MOTIS for routing on top of #OpenTripPlanner, you are likely regularly downloading "*.osm.pdf" files.

Some of these are huge and slow to download. But there's a way to download 99% less data, speeding up the process a lot.

Add pyosmium 4 to your workflow and it can patch these files instead of doing full re-downloads. Works great with GeoFabrik!

MOTIS is a routing engine on top of #OpenStreetMap that I believe can handle transit, bike share, real-time feeds as well as walk/bike/driving directions. It competes with projects like #OpenTripPlanner and #Valhalla. https://mastodon.social/@felixguendling/114881454870500336

New MARTA trip planner and tracker is live at https://tracker.itsmarta.com! It is based on OpenTripPlanner.

@LinusWeidickFrische I should! It looks like they have been drawn, but they are old routes from a couple years ago.

So first step would be to give #OpenStreetMap an up to date version of the bus routes.

But to my understanding OSM is not interested in timetable information, which I'd need for a Google Maps replacement. Which is where the second step of having a #OpenTripPlanner server comes in.

Earlier this year I had a medical incident resulting in me being prohibited from driving for 6 months.

The bus routes in #Tórshavn are only on Google Maps (which I'd rather not use), but I know the municipality has #GTFS files of their routes.

So I am now thinking about asking if I can get them, and then spinning up a #OpenTripPlanner server...

My energy is probably better spent elsewhere, but the techy in me wants to give it a try lmao

@awinkler for which region? For car only routing there exist several (#graphhopper, #osrm, #valhalla ), for transit routing, data availability is still an issue. The #transitous project is the largest free instance I‘m aware of. For smaller regions, you might self-host e.g. an #OpenTripPlanner or #MOTIS instance https://transitous.org/
