Self reflection:
I miss quote-posting, while completely understanding the stance against it on Mastodon/Fediverse, due its consistently toxic misuse on the birdsite
When something is interesting I do want to bring it to a wider audience and also provide context. The boost button does the former, while preventing the latter.
The problem is one of community boundaries and the technical difficulties of delivering systems that allow specified reach without leading to context collapse
In our work on #OpenKnowledgeInstitutions we identify the importance of "coordinating institutions" that provide rules-based spaces to mediate between communities
Social media tools that succeeded largely did so due to scale, and many efforts at tools supporting well defined (let alone diffuse) but smaller communities failed
The fediverse solution to the coordinating institution problem (servers) seems to confuse and not to scale, but are there good examples of it working?
