When Actions Don't Align with Words

I saw some reports on Reddit that Cisco has blocked access to OpenH264 downloads for all of Ukraine. The corresponding GitHub issue is filled with similar complaints from frustrated users. I'm in Western Ukraine myself, and while all my updates are installed, I can also confirm the resource is completely inaccessible.

This situation is particularly confusing because Cisco has been so vocal about its support for Ukraine. You can read their official statement here:

https://blogs.cisco.com/news/cisco-stands-on-guard-with-our-customers-in-ukraine

It's simply difficult to reconcile those promises with the fact that access to a core service has been seemingly cut off.

We sincerely hope this is an unintentional technical oversight, and not a policy decision. Blocking an entire country you have publicly vowed to support is unprofessional and deeply frustrating for your users here. We trust this issue will be investigated and corrected promptly, allowing your actions to once again align with the values you've proclaimed.

Ah, the saga of #OpenH264 in the Freedesktop SDK—a tale as riveting as watching paint dry 🎨. Dropping it must have been like finally ditching that one old sweater nobody wears anymore 🧥. Spoiler alert: the world keeps spinning! 🌍🔄

Closing the chapter on OpenH264

People might have noticed me talking about dropping OpenH264 from Freedesktop SDK. Here, I’ll try to go a bit into the history, the timeline and what led to the final decision. A bit of an introduction If you are unfamiliar with the Freedesktop SDK project, it was born out of the initial 1.6 Flatpak runtime image created by Alexander Larsson to provide a host independent “runtime” for Flatpaks. Since then, with the help of Codethink and others, it grew into an independent project maintained by the community that aims to provide a “A minimal Linux runtime”.
