Last week I finished logging #OpenDNS being used to block #GMail login's.

Put simply OpenDNS would block connections TO https://mail.google.com via DNS. I logged this over a 72+hr period btw. 😅

Luckily all these dumb DNS things caught the attention of several ppl at #Cisco.

Stay frosty out there when #Gmail goes brrrrrr 👉🥶

Update 4 August 2020: replace CHAOS class by CH in dig commands so they work with kdig too, Quad9 now does support QNAME minimisation, Quad9 has alternative servers available with ECS support and without QNAME minimisation, Google now also does QNAME minimisation.

Update 9 June 2025: read this new article for a more up to date review of European public DNS servers.

Facing escalating DNS piracy blocking orders, major providers like OpenDNS, Cloudflare, and Google are adopting notably different responses.

in short, when Government agencies insist a DNS provider block (or worse poison) the resolver for a given pirate site, companies have responded in different ways

OpenDNS = Would rather stop serving an entire country than capitulate

Cloudflare = Blocks the IP but gives an explicit error message stating that it is being forced to do so.

Google DNS = Complete & total submission, DNS won't resolve, leaves customers in the dark.

In the latest episode of "Let's Pretend We're Trying to Stop Piracy," #Google, #Cloudflare, and #OpenDNS each play their own game of "Who Cares the Least?" 🤷‍♂️ OpenDNS hands the order a tissue, Google shrugs nonchalantly, and Cloudflare...well, bless their hearts, they're still trying to find the 'Block' button. 🚫🔍
