Frazier Baker, first Black postmaster in South Carolina, and his baby daughter were shot and killed when they attempted to flee their burning home.

Waipukurau Press #OnThis Day 18 January 1935. A Chinese market gardener, Low Hing, was gored by a bull on Mr. Holgerson’s farm, Motuiti, to-day. Hing was passing through a paddock when the bull commenced to paw the ground and bellow. Hing, who was armed with an axe, went up to the animal and grabed the chain attached to its nose and threatened it with the axe he was carrying. The bull knocked him down, but did not continue to gore him.

From inquiries made in Wellington amongst Chinese residents it would appear that supporters of the Southern forces are numerous in New Zealand. One young Chinaman, of a highly, intelligent type, stated quite frankly today that three-quarters of the number of Chinese in New Zealand came from Canton, and were sympathetic towards the Southern Army.

On 14 December 1911 Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen and four other team members are the first to reach the geographical South Pole. Amundsen's crew were: Helmer Hanssen Sverre Hassel Oscar Wisting Olav Bjaaland credit: bilinmiyor, CC BY-SA 4.0 , via Wikimedia Commons There were also 14 shore crew supporting the expedition. Reaching the South Pole was an amazing achievement for the small independent nation of Norway.

He left his home on January 17, 1985, having traveled a total of 735,000 km and visited 214 independent countries and territories. Emilio rode the entire trip on a 1980 Honda Goldwing GL1100 motorcycle, nicknamed “Black Princess,” which consumed 47,000 liters of fuel, 1,300 liters of oil, 86 tires, 12 batteries, and 9 seats.

In the Magistrates Court on Wednesday a youth named N. H. B. Marshall pleaded not guilty to a charge of assaulting George Wong, a Chinese green-grocer.

The defendant went into complainant’s shop & asked for mandarins, which complainant refused to supply without the money, and defendant then picked up a 7lb iron weight off the counter and threw it at Wong.
