Another train trip, this time to Osnabrück on a route I know well from my days when I was living in the Netherlands but I had never stopped there. My child and I went for an appointment but of course I wanted to see at least a little bit of the old city centre, so on our way back to the station we decided to get off the bus early. It was a very pleasant area, mostly free from snow and ice, but my brain wasn’t on full capacity and I think it’s probably worth coming back at a warmer time of the year 🥶😅

The trip itself went really well, just a few minutes of being late here and there, mostly owed to the freezing weather. There weren’t many people on the train either which made it even better.

A visit to Hildesheim. City of churches, two of them UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

The first church we visited was the Basilica St. Godehard which is a beautiful example of Romanesque architecture (which I seem to love). I’m surprised this is not among the UNESCO world heritage sites.

Then there was the Mariendom (St Mary’s) with its 1000-year-old rose. There was plenty to see and it rightfully is part of the UNESCO list.

Wherever we looked we would see buildings that spoke of a religious past but not all of them were churches.

Another fine building inside and out was St. Michael’s (the second UNESCO listed church) which often looks just wonderful in the afternoon sun sitting there on its tiny hill.

The last one was St. Andreas but we couldn’t find an open door so I have no idea about its inner beauty.

I was on a train trip again: the second time this year going south through west Germany. I’ve just realised that I never posted any photos from our holiday in July which crossed a similar area, just straight down to Frankfurt, then Karlsruhe and Strasbourg with Paris as the destination. This time for my trip out I took a train going through the very western area near the Netherlands and Belgium all the way along the river Rhine down to Koblenz and then along the river Mosel almost all the way to Trier (which is very close to Luxemburg). On my way back I took a different route, I went by bus over to Idar-Oberstein, then on a regional train to Frankfurt and from there (on a slight detour because of an emergency on the normal route) back home to Hanover.

The purpose of the trip was celebrating a birthday of a teenage days friend of mine and that was fun - but the journey down there along the rivers was spectacular. The trip back took me through a very forest-covered hilly region called Hunsrück which is also beautiful but being on a bus made it impossible to take any good photos.

Berlin’s Ostbahnhof is almost done. The last years it was always very cramped on the platforms as there was lots of scaffolding going all the way up to the roof. All that’s left now are the red things and bags with sand and gravel. Finally.

Whenever I’m in Berlin I have to take a photo of the Berlin TV tower to show that it still exists - but this time I discovered it in the wrong direction, as a reflection in the window of an office building opposite of the hotel.
