Went to the park today so that I could walk while listening to / participating in the #KOWABUNGAnet on the #DODROPINcinference via #Echolink. I ran into a buddy there (another local ham) who just happened to be out for a walk, and we saw one of Olney’s white squirrels posing for a promotional Olney photo. #OlneyWhiteSquirrel #WhiteSquirrel #WhiteSquirrelsOfOlneyIllinois
One of Olney, Illinois’ white squirrels spotted while Finn-Ray and I were out for a walk around Olney City Park this evening. We saw about 5 of them all together in different spots; this one was the most photogenic, meaning that it didn’t immediately run behind a tree. #OlneyWhiteSquirrel #OlneyIllinois #KE0FFT
@gmoretti Thanks! White squirrels are Olney’s claim to fame. We have several statues of white squirrels in our downtown area, quite a few murals that contain white squirrels on our local architecture, and a population (sadly, ever decreasing) of a few hundred white squirrels that have called Olney home since the very early 1900’s. If you’re interested, can find some of my video clips and pics of our squirrels under the hashtag #olneywhitesquirrel
One of Olney, Illinois’ claims to fame is its population of white squirrels. Here are a couple of pictures of Olney’s white squirrels painted on two of the tables at the “El Cactus” restaurant on Main Street, right across from the courthouse, as well as a front page headline from the latest edition of “The Olney Gazette.” #OlneyIllinois #OlneyWhiteSquirrel #KE0FFT
Olney City Park today. It’s a shame that I didn’t get the focus right on the first pic. I really like the composition of that photo otherwise. First time I’ve had that camera out of its case since 2019! These are two different #squirrels. First one was across the street to the northwest of the stage. Second one was over near the east entrance near where the city trucks are typically parked. #OlneyWhiteSquirrel #WhiteSquirrel #OlneyIllinois
Today we spotted one of Olney’s famous white squirrels as we were driving through the Olney City Park. While the #WhiteSquirrel population is in decline (the city has volunteers do a count every year) it is still not uncommon for us to spot at least one during our drives through town. We have one that lives in our neighborhood. A fun little quirky characteristic of our fun little quirky town. #OlneyWhiteSquirrel
