“But the Solar System!” I protested.
“What the deuce is it to me?” he interrupted impatiently; “you say that we go round the sun. If we went round the moon it would not make a pennyworth of difference to me or to my work.”
“You see, but you do not observe. The distinction is clear. For example, you have frequently seen the steps which lead up from the hall to this room.”
“Frequently.”
“How often?”
“Well, some hundreds of times.”
“Then how many are there?”
“How many? I don’t know.”
“Quite so! You have not observed. And yet you have seen. That is just my point. Now, I know that there are seventeen steps, because I have both seen and observed."
I find it "amusing" that Sherlock couldn't GAF about the solar system, BUT for some reason found it important to not only the count the stairs up to his flat, but to remember the number. And how does THAT make a difference to you or your work, sir?
(Definitely not bitter that my dad used to needle me about, "Oh if you admire Sherlock Holmes so much, have you ever counted OUR stairs?")
