That's astonishing. I always thought a supernova is a one-in-a-century kind of thing. Until I read this blog post by an astronomer:

BAN #447: Wait. HOW MANY supernova explode every year?

Whenever I see negative feedback about the #fediverse, it is about:
1. being lonely
2. lacks discoverability
3. reach is poor
4. support for this and that is lacking
5. not welcoming for other people

All of the above, it has to do with what I've described in this quoted post,
#ObservableFediverse. Meaning, one was only exposed to a very small part of the fediverse from that person's vantage point.

Let's take for example the #5 item. Is the fediverse not welcoming for certain groups of people, the minorities, the marginalised, those with disabilities, and often discriminated based on origin?

I am an
#Asian, a #Filipino - #Chinese to be exact, and I am also #autistic. There is an active community, as well as #groups, for Filipinos and #ActuallyAutistics here in the fediverse network.

Have you seen those? More likely not. Why? “Observable fediverse.”

In
#astronomy, an #ObservableUniverse is the part of the huge universe that we can observe from Earth. It is how far our current technology can reach.

It is the same in “observable fediverse”. What you see, what you are interacting with, is only what you currently have access to. Your “observable fediverse” relies on these factors:

1. The users in your instance.
2. The remote users and other servers your instance is aware of.
3. The people you are following (which include groups).

That is your “observable fediverse”.

Since you are not following a user who is following a Filipino, or is a member of an autistic group, there is very little chance you will see content from Filipinos and autistics.

Another reason of disappointment is misunderstanding what the “fediverse/global timeline” is. Here's the thing, it is just the public chatter.

Think of it as visiting a crowded public park. You'll hear all kinds of discussions. There are those that are offensive, and those that are not.

The “federated/global timeline” is also
not the entirety of the fediverse. It is only what your instance/server is aware of. If what you most see are unwelcoming content, then don't look at it, or move to a new instance, or ask around. I'm sure your own instance will help you find like-minded individuals and groups.

That's your
observable fediverse. The fediverse is not unwelcoming. My guesstimate is, no one account, no one server, have seen more than 1% of the entire fediverse. Just like how we haven't seen more than 1% of the entire universe.

Content warning: Universe and Fediverse … an attempt to put some context to how big it is

C.IM

In #astronomy, the phrase “observable universe” came into use to describe what we can see/observe from our vantage point.

The fediverse has grown so big since its humble beginnings in 2008. My guess is, we are only seeing 0.5% of what it is today. That is your “observable fediverse”, relative from your account.

1. The instances your instance are aware of.
2. The remote users your local instance natives are replying/boosting.
3. The remote users you, yourself is following.
4. And the remote users being boosted/replied to by the remote users you are following.

Those are the only ones in your #ObservableFediverse. My observable fediverse is different from your observable fediverse. I am seeing content you are not seeing, and vice versa.

Just like how improving our technologies help us expand our #ObservableUniverse. We need to grow our network to expand our relative observable fediverse.

The only difference between observable universe and observable fediverse is that, we still haven't found life on other planets; but in the fediverse, we already did (see: https://c.im/@youronlyone/110159720528061374).

A fun way to understand the #fediverse: #roleplaying / #immersion! --- Journal entry #1105 In this entry, I will try to describe how our reality is, in the hopes that our reality can be easily understood. 1. Our universe is called the Fediverse. 2. There is what we call #DarkMatter, it glues everything together preventing the universe from being torn apart. This dark matter is everywhere, and it is through this that communications across the universe is possible, we call this technology #ActivityPub. 3. There are countless of galaxies, some still being born, some already known, like: #Friendica #Calckey #Hubzilla #Rebased #Streams #Pixelfed #Bookwyrm #FunkWhale #PeerTube #WriteAs #Lemmy #GoToSocial and #Mastodon. 4. Each galaxy contains different worlds. Some are flat, some round, some a generational ship, and some wayward worlds dubbed #WanderingEarth. These are the worlds that I've visited so far: * c.im - the people here believes the world is round, because of this unusual belief, they can say things up to 5,000 characters. This world is in the Mastodon galaxy, where many of the other worlds are flat 500 characters. * hashi.icu - this world is a generational ship. They travel to different worlds, creating bridges, their motto: ICU (you know, I See You). Oh, be warned, they speak up to 300,000 characters! After all, they have plenty of stories to tell. * c.wtf - this world was recently founded in the Rebased galaxy. Like their origin world, c.im, they can speak up to 5,000 characters. * p.lu - the people of c.im are truly explorers. They discovered the PeerTube galaxy and were amazed by the technology there: hosting videos through the peer-to-peer protocol! They immediately established a colony in one of the worlds in the PeerTube galaxy. * i.calckey.cloud - this is the primary world of the Calckey galaxy, and it is a world filled with clouds. Some think that it means its people are high, well, they are high, they live on (or in?) the clouds after all! However, its people are great calculators, I mean, at calculation. Did I not mention they can speak up to 3,000 characters? * zotum.net - a “Wandering Earth” in the Hubzilla galaxy. This world is one of the oldest. Rumour has it that it used to be located in the Friendica galaxy. A wandering earth indeed! Those are only a few of the worlds I have seen for myself. But, there is something far larger than this universe. You see, my dear reader, the Friendica, Hubzilla, Streams, and #SocialHome galaxies developed technology to communicate with another universe. This universe is called #TheFederation and their communication technology, also based on dark matter, is called #diaspora. That's not all. It was also discovered that there is another universe. The people in this universe calls it #Jabber and their dark matter based communication technology is called #XMPP. The technology to commmunicate with them is still in experimental stages, only few worlds in the fediverse are brave enough to test this technology. My tip, if you are a migrant, find any world and start there. Understand the basics of our universe. You can always move to a new world with your social connections, or start all over again, with a fresh identity if you like. PS There is this thing called #Twitter, and most migrants are coming from there. It is probably a universe, though based on whispers, it is a #LostWorld floating between universes, in total darkness. I even heard one migrant comment that that world is about to implode. Note: If you are a citizen of the fediverse, please welcome and guide everyone in this #TwitterMigration. They are looking for a new home, and our universe can be confusing for them. If whispers are to be believed, Twitter is but a single world, and ours is a universe. End of journal entry #1105 --- ^_^ (Edit: typos)
