During the #OSR26UK I had interesting discussions about #bullying in academics and that institutions often stay silent, protecting the bully rather than the victim(s).
Now, I learned that there is a word for it: “organizational betrayal”. And tons of research about the impact for the victim and how it harms the institutions themselves.
My (preliminary) conclusion: bullying has a history before it surfaces. When an institution realizes that, it is already too late. From an organizational perspective the choice is easy: Do we leave the victim only with the choice to leave (loss of one, presumably already underperforming, worker)? Or do we invest time and energy in mucking the stall — with all the legal risks that might come along, possibly loosing several “good” workers?
The long term repercussions are, of course, disastrous. Simply because the bully will be bullying again and again.
