Thousands of taxpayers’ information accessed in CRA breaches

Federal privacy commissioner Philippe Dufresne said in a special report to Parliament on Thursday that there had been more than 42,000 confirmed individual data breaches at the Canada Revenue Agency since 2020.

These breaches led to unauthorized access to confidential tax and personal information, often perpetrated by “bad actors with the objective of financial gain,” according to the report [and] given the number of breaches, the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) failed to adequately protect the personal information that was under its control and went on to make nine recommendations to the agency for improvement.

OpenAI violated Canadian privacy laws, federal and provincial watchdogs say

Commissioners from four of Canada’s privacy watchdogs have found that OpenAI violated Canadian privacy laws while developing and training its early models of ChatGPT.

Philippe Dufresne, Canada’s privacy commissioner, was joined by his provincial counterparts from British Columbia, Alberta, and Québec to announce the findings of a joint investigation into the tech giant. The investigation examined how OpenAI sourced training data for its early, GPT-3.5 and GPT-4 models, which included scraped content from publicly accessible internet sources like social media and blog posts, licensed third party sources like media outlets and stock image vendors, and user interactions with ChatGPT.

Dufresne noted that all four regulators found OpenAI had violated various federal and provincial privacy laws, including the federal Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA), and its provincial counterparts in Alberta, BC, and Québec.

Privacy commissioner expands probe into X after backlash over Grok’s sexual deepfakes

Canada’s privacy commissioner is expanding his investigation into Elon Musk’s X Corp. following multiple reports that its artificial intelligence chatbot Grok is being used to create and share explicit images of people without their consent. 

“The use of personal information without consent to create deepfakes, including intimate images, is a growing phenomenon that poses serious risks to individuals’ fundamental right to privacy,” Commissioner Philippe Dufresne said in a statement. 

“I have decided to expand my investigation to address this issue given its importance and the potential serious harms that it may cause to Canadians,” he added.
