TIL about Yakisugi, meaning burnt and cedar. It's from Japan.
A beautiful natural treatment of wood.
It's where you partially burn wood, to cook off surface material cellulose and hemicellulose (main volatiles) and create a carbon layer. This is called pyrolysis. Because of this, it's reduces fire hazard by reducing the amount of readily available low ignition volatiles to combust. It also reduces damage from seawater and humidity, and safer.
