Last year, 2024, I put in a #privacy complaint to the #OAIC about #Facebook. A year later I got a response, and I must admit my complaint was a bit naïve.

Firstly, I was wrong to assume that a company had to appoint a privacy officer and provide human responses to privacy enquiries. AI slop is fine, according to the OAIC, as this is a "service-related matter instead of a privacy matter".

called #qantas today about their "cyber indicent" this year where a tonne of people had a tonne of personal info exposed, they're response was the equivalent of *shrug*

they told me it's up to me to watch out for issues, it's up to me to contact idcare, they won't provide any compensation, "check our website", and you're on your own

what made the call more surreal was their automated spiel that went on about how they use your personal information according to their privacy policy. which when you get hacked is worth less than the proverbial paper it's printed on

for a multibillion dollar company they have zero fucks to give. the #oaic points people to qantas, but see above about how effective that will be

Next week it is Australian #privacy #awareness week.

If we say that many Bretheren volunteered (as people) to the Liberal Party of Australia (a political party, excluded from the Privacy Act) then we are firmly in "Nothing to see here people" territory.

I wonder though:
#whatIf the data were handed to the Bretheren (an organisation) WITHOUT A CONTRACT with the Liberal Party of Australia?

Maybe then we are in interesting territory?

The Bretheren would not be 'subcontractors', nor 'volunteers' for the purposes of the Privacy Act, but just plain-old members of an organisation, on the face of it, subject to the Privacy Act as a section 6C 'organisation'.

I wonder if a Senator (sickem Rex) might ask to see that contract next time the Senate sits?
