Wildlife scientists aboard Australia's icebreaker #Nuyina believe a deadly strain of bird flu has reached the sub-Antarctic Heard Island after they witnessed unusual levels of mortality in elephant seals.

The scientists say penguins and other bird species frequenting the Australian territory island have not been impacted.

"True #trilobites went #extinct more than 250m years ago, but the #SouthernOcean is home to a living lookalike: Ceratoserolis trilobitoides. They have a segmented, armoured exoskeleton, which helps protect them from predators... after a marine science voyage, a team aboard #Australia’s icebreaker #Nuyina has collected some remarkable species from the waters around the #DenmanGlacier"

Characterised by darkness and cold temperatures, the extreme environment of Antarctica’s deep sea is largely unexplored. Now, after a special marine science voyage, a team aboard Australia’s national icebreaker, RSV Nuyina, has collected some remarkable species from the waters around the Denman Glacier

"The RSV #Nuyina is partway through a 60-day voyage to the edge of #Antarctica — it's first mission dedicated solely to marine science... research teams are analysing some of the unique #biodiversity found in the #SouthernOcean. These include #SeaSpiders as big as your hand, #SeaStars that grow to the size of a dinner plate and #octopus species endemic to the region... some could be new to science"

"Deep inside the icebreaker RSV #Nuyina off the coast of East #Antarctica, as 9-metre swells and 50-knot gales rage outside, the #plankton team is busy collecting tiny creatures with the wet well: a unique sampling space below the waterline, connected to the ocean by large inlets... the wet well enables particularly fragile #animals, like #salps and #jellyfish, to be captured alive and in good condition."

this needs a revisit big time, but if you want some weird maps of where #Nuyina is check this mess of a readme out:

I should make a dashboard or something so we can do this nicely ...

"For the first time, a range of fragile and exotic #MarineCreatures, captured in waters off #Antarctica in perfect condition, are being housed in the Australian Antarctic Division’s research #aquarium. The gelatinous organisms include predatory #SeaAngels and #CombJellies that were captured in RSV #Nuyina’s unique ‘wet well’, during a recent voyage to Mawson research station."

"Over 33 years the #SouthernOcean CPR tows have revealed changes in the abundance, composition, distribution and diversity of #plankton species. This includes a decline in the numbers of #krill caught, an increase in smaller #zooplankton, and sudden massive #blooms of other plankton species spread over large areas."
