Overseas recruitment drive fills nurse vacancies at Swansea Bay hospitals

The health board confirmed that 569 internationally educated nurses have joined its workforce since the targeted recruitment programme began, with the final cohort arriving this summer. Most have taken up posts in adult acute wards, paediatrics and neonatal care, theatres, cancer services, intensive care, maternity and mental health.

The influx means vacancy rates for Band 5 registered nurses — a role category that has faced persistent shortages across the NHS — are now at “a very low level” in Swansea Bay.

Reducing reliance on agency staff

The health board said the increase in permanent staff has eased pressure on existing teams and reduced the need for costly agency cover.

Lynne Jones, Head of Nursing Education and Recruitment, said the campaign was launched to address a significant shortfall in Band 5 nurses.

“We have ethically recruited from countries which have surplus nurses, and we are now benefiting from their experience and skills,” she said.

The programme also helped 21 healthcare support workers already employed by the health board — but qualified as nurses in their home countries — to pass UK registration exams and move into nursing roles.

Training hub legacy

A dedicated training centre in Baglan was set up to prepare recruits for the Nursing and Midwifery Council’s Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE). The facility has also trained 22 nurses from other Welsh health boards.

While the international recruitment campaign has now ended, the health board says the Baglan centre will continue to be used for staff development, leadership courses and clinical skills training.

‘A great blend of staff’

Executive Director of Nursing and Patient Experience Liz Rix hosted a welcome event for the latest arrivals, describing the programme as a success that has strengthened patient care.

Ms Jones added:

“We now have a great blend of staff in terms of culture and diversity, and that leads to even better care for our patients.”

Himachal News: हिमाचल प्रदेश सरकार ने स्वास्थ्य विभाग में नर्स भर्ती में कोरोना वॉरियर्स को प्राथमिकता देने का फैसला किया है। यह निर्णय मुख्यमंत्री सुखविंद्र सिंह सुक्खू की अध्यक्षता में शिमला में आईजीएमसी और अटल इंस्टीट्यूट ऑफ मेडिकल सुपर स्पेशियलिटी के संवाद के दौरान लिया गया। स्वास्थ्य सेवाओं को मजबूत करने के लिए सरकार मेडिकल टेक्नोलॉजी पर 1350 करोड़ रुपये खर्च कर रही है।

स्वास्थ्य सेवाओं में सुधार की पहल

मुख्यमंत्री ने घोषणा की कि सरकारी स्वास्थ्य संस्थानों में 20 साल पुरानी मशीनों को एक साल में बदल दिया जाएगा। चमियाणा और टांडा मेडिकल कॉलेज में दो महीने के भीतर रोबोटिक सर्जरी शुरू होगी। सभी मेडिकल कॉलेजों में चरणबद्ध तरीके से थ्री टेस्ला एमआरआई मशीनें स्थापित की जाएंगी। यह कदम स्वास्थ्य सेवाओं को आधुनिक बनाने की दिशा में महत्वपूर्ण है।

नर्स भर्ती में कोरोना वॉरियर्स को प्राथमिकता

हिमाचल स्वास्थ्य विभाग में नर्सों की भर्ती में उन नर्सों को प्राथमिकता दी जाएगी, जिन्होंने कोरोना महामारी के दौरान सेवाएं दीं। इसके अलावा, डॉक्टरों, पैरा मेडिकल स्टाफ और टेक्नीशियनों के रिक्त पदों को भी भरा जाएगा। यह निर्णय स्वास्थ्य सेवाओं की कमी को दूर करने और मरीजों को बेहतर सुविधाएं देने के लिए लिया गया है।

मेडिकल कॉलेजों में सुधार के लिए निवेश

आईजीएमसी शिमला में स्वास्थ्य सेवाओं को बेहतर बनाने के लिए सरकार ने 100 करोड़ रुपये खर्च किए हैं। भविष्य में इसे और बेहतर करने के लिए 200 करोड़ रुपये और आवंटित किए जाएंगे। मुख्यमंत्री ने कहा कि पिछली सरकारों ने स्वास्थ्य सेवाओं पर ध्यान नहीं दिया, जिसके कारण मरीजों को परेशानी हुई। वर्तमान सरकार शिक्षा और स्वास्थ्य को प्राथमिकता दे रही है।

पुरानी पेंशन बहाली और आर्थिक चुनौतियां

सीएम ने बताया कि पुरानी पेंशन बहाली के कारण प्रदेश पर आर्थिक प्रतिबंध लगे हैं। फिर भी, सरकार स्वास्थ्य सेवाओं को बेहतर बनाने के लिए प्रतिबद्ध है। उन्होंने डॉक्टरों से मरीजों के साथ बेहतर व्यवहार करने की अपील की। उनका कहना है कि मरीजों से अच्छी बातचीत उनकी तकलीफ को कम कर सकती है। यह कदम स्वास्थ्य सेवाओं में विश्वास बढ़ाएगा।

डॉक्टरों के व्यवहार में सुधार की जरूरत

मुख्यमंत्री ने डॉक्टरों से अपने व्यवहार में बदलाव लाने को कहा। उन्होंने बताया कि मरीज अस्पताल में ठीक होने की उम्मीद के साथ आते हैं। अगर डॉक्टर मरीजों से सम्मान और सहानुभूति के साथ बात करें, तो यह उनकी मानसिक स्थिति को बेहतर करेगा। इस दिशा में सरकार मेडिकल स्टाफ को प्रशिक्षण देने पर भी विचार कर रही है।

स्वास्थ्य सेवाओं का भविष्य

हिमाचल स्वास्थ्य विभाग में सुधार के लिए सरकार कई कदम उठा रही है। मेडिकल कॉलेजों में आधुनिक तकनीक की स्थापना और नर्स भर्ती में कोरोना वॉरियर्स को प्राथमिकता देना इनमें शामिल है। सरकार का लक्ष्य मरीजों को बेहतर और समय पर स्वास्थ्य सेवाएं प्रदान करना है। इन प्रयासों से हिमाचल में स्वास्थ्य क्षेत्र में क्रांतिकारी बदलाव की उम्मीद है।
