US "defense" policy dictates that the president must always be able to launch nuclear weapons in minutes. 1,770 weapons are maintained ready to fire on command. The tools for the president to order nuclear attack are contained in a suitcase nicknamed the #NuclearFootball and is never more than 100m away.

Here is the Nuclear Football entering the #Hiroshima Memorial Peace Park with Biden during the #G7 yesterday (Chugoku Newspaper Press image).

It is callous to bring the ability to launch nuclear attacks from the place where more than 100,000 were killed by a previous US nuclear attack. It is also the reality of nuclear weapons for the G7, rather than the performance of wanting a world free of nuclear weapons. The reality is a world were the use of nuclear weapons is never more than 100m away.

Really good story by my friend Uzaemonnaotsuka Toukai in the Chugoku Shimbun, our local newspaper here in #Hiroshima, with an image of the US nuclear football in the Hiroshima Peace Park during the visit there yesterday by President Biden during the #G7.

This enables the president to order the launch of #nuclear weapons from anywhere, in this case, from inside the Hiroshima Memorial Peace Park.

The presence of this military capability in such a place is both disrespectful to those killed by the 1945 nuclear attack, and highlights the insanity of nuclear weapon policies. It also shows how performative is the idea that the G7 Summit reflected any desire for nuclear disarmament.
