The Green nuc hive was bearding a little today so I put them in a 10-frame deep box. 3+ frames capped brood so I guess the new queen is good.

The nucs were started 4 weeks ago with swarm cells/queens. In 1 week all that capped brood should start emerging.

I stacked the Green nuc box on top of the White nuc but it's progressing a lot slower. It started with 2 frames of bees instead of 3 like the Green nuc.

The bees in the nuc hives on this cool and windy Sunday morning that was 57F or 14C when the video was recorded. I think the plan is to move the green bees into a 10 frame deep, and give the white nuc a top box since they started with fewer bees. The queens have only been laying for a week to ten days (hopefully) so a couple of weeks will reveal the new activity.

The nuc hives seem to be doing good. The green one has more pollen coming in, the white one is taking more syrup.

The White nuc that only had 2 frames of bees, brood, and food is consuming food faster than the Green nuc so I upped the size of the feeder. I've been feeding 1:1 syrup of sugar and switched to goldenrod honey today. Small jar had 250g sugar/honey. Big jar is 660g honey.

When I first set the feeder this morning I thought it was leaking because it was bubbling so fast. Checked and it had a ball of bees on it.

What do you think? A queen?

Returning from a mating flight.. It's been 5 days since frames with queen cells were put in the nuc but maybe she was already emerged and I didn't see her. They say 6 days to mature but these are bees so they have their own plans.

The white nuc yesterday. It seems to have guard bees on duty so maybe they like the queen I put in there. I see a few other bees coming and going but the activity is less than the green nuc. This one only had 2 frames of bees, brood, food, and queen cells when split but I put an emerged queen into the hive the next day.

The bees at the green nuc yesterday. This is the one that has 3 frames of bees, brood, food, and queen cells. I've seen foragers coming in with pollen so I guess some didn't decide to go back to their old hive. I might have observed a little bit of robbing going on too but it's hard to tell if the bees fly off into the yonder or turn directly into one of the hives next to it.

I added some plates to attach the bottom board for moving the nuc hives around and to stack them 2 deep for normal or use as a bait hive. I also added a traditional 'looks like a tree hole' feature to the entrance, put a piece of corrugated plastic sheet under the cover so they can't glue it down, and used some canopy bungee cords to hold down the cover. It's baited up and 5 heavy waxed frames in the top box.

I made a deep Langstoth box, then I cut it in half and made two 5-frame nuc hives. 100% recycled wood except the frames shown. Painted with boiled linseed oil, the 'white' is zinc oxide mixed in, and the green is green iron oxide and zinc oxide mix. Migratory type covers, no inner. Cleat handles after it was painted so a dado could be cut so they could be glued. Glued and screwed throughout with some dowels to align the panel pieces. More in ALT.
