Are some #Novell #NetWare veterans here in the Fediverse?
I'm trying to install #GroupWise 6 on a NetWare 4.2 server and fail with installing the WebAccess component.
The GWINTER.NLM fails to load because it cannot find the function "ValidateAddressRange".
The problem is, I cannot find any reference to such a problem anywhere, even in Usenet postings from back then.
Has anyone some hints if this could be made working?

Happy Birthday, #Ethernet!

Man, this article took me down memory lane lol. My networking days started with #10Base2, T-connectors, #ISA NICs, #tokenring topologies, and #Novell's IPX/SPX! #Thicknet was already old tech when I got into it in the mid to late 1980's. But I did learn about it at my local library! I wasn't even 10 yet!

Can you even imagine what a #terabit looks like? My past self wouldn't have even thought that was possible in his lifetime lol.

Thank you Bob Metcalfe! Our world literally would not be what it is without your invention.

From Megabits to Terabits: Ethernet Celebrates Its Birthday

Exactly fifty years ago, the first concept of the computer networks we know today as Ethernet was designed. It has evolved from a thick coaxial cable connecting computers in a single location to the most common way of connecting networks of all sizes via twisted pair and optical fibre.

Catch of the Day: Surfing in the Server Room! 🦖💾

Hey Retro Fans and IT Veterans!

Sometimes our FrogFind radar catches exotics that make even hardcore system administrators rub their eyes in disbelief. Forget old handhelds or consoles—today we are diving deep into the flickering neon lights of the corporate server rooms of the early 2000s.

Our bouncer logged this majestic user agent:
Mozilla/5.0 (NetWare; U; NetWare 6.50.08; en-US) ICEbrowser/6.1.2 NovellViewPort/3.7.2

For anyone who entered IT after 1995: We are talking about Novell NetWare 6.5! This was not a system for browsing or gaming. NetWare was the undisputed file and print server operating system that practically kept every corporate network running back in the day. An absolute workhorse.

But how does a NetWare server end up on FrogFind? The answer lies in the ICEbrowser tag. To display help files or the "Novell Remote Manager" directly at the server rack on the graphical emergency console, Novell had embedded a tiny, Java-written browser from ICEsoft. It was never intended to explore the open World Wide Web!

The fact that now, over 20 years later, someone is literally (or via remote connection) sitting in front of this server legend, opening the graphical console, hijacking the rudimentary Java help viewer, and using it to ping FrogFind is absolute top-tier retro computing. FrogFind delivers even to this pure server operating system the bare HTML it needs to read today's world.

Cheers to the unknown admin keeping this server alive! May your disk arrays never fail.

Back In The Day - early/mid 90s - I saw #SCO (or possibly #Novell) demo a version of #Unixware on some funky PC hardware where you could add and remove physical CPUs and memory on the fly. Does anyone remember what that hardware was?

And does anyone know when this feature will be added to #QEMU? It's just that my #FreeBSD testing VM has just started swapping, and I'd like to allocate more memory without having to stop it.

I worked at two, maybe three places that ran #Novell netware but I never got into any of the admin side.
Based on this the second picture in this toot https://techhub.social/@Sonikku/116307060606532613 Relevant text from a Seagate hard drive label is
"Novell Netware Ready
Formatting, Compsurfing or surface scanning will DESTROY Netware ready signature on this drive"
What was #compsurfing in the context of Novell? I found like 3 posts and it seems to be some fragile way of imprinting a license key into the hard drive but I would love to know more.
