I watched an episode of Dr Who with my son a few days ago and it cemented what turns me off with new Who; all of the new incarnations (including Capaldi) are filled with a strange irreverent breathless enthusiasm. They’re comedy characters who aren’t funny, but mainly (to me) irritating. There were shades of that in the old Docs (notably not Hartnell or Pertwee though) but it wasn’t their defining character trait. My 10-year old also agreed - ‘cringe’, in his terms.

I can see the literary quality of the Nebula-winning novel, but I didn’t particularly enjoy reading it, nor find it artistically satisfying, which was weird for me, because so many people I admire were really taken with it. #NotForMe
