Federal government approves #Woodside’s massive #NorthWestShelf #extension with protections for rock art.
The extension to 2070 of one of the world’s biggest #gas export projects, the Govt saying it has agreed to conditions to protect more than 1m pieces of ancient #WorldHeritage listed #indigenous #rockart that sit adjacent to the site.
Climate campaigners have described Woodside’s North West Shelf extension as a “#carbonbomb” that is incompatible with global climate goals. #auspol
#Greens leader #LarissaWaters, says the #environment minister, #MurrayWatt, should rescind his provisional approval of #Woodside’s #NorthWestShelf extension to give the nearby ancient #Murujuga #rockart a better chance of gaining world heritage status.
“We want to see this global treasure listed as #worldheritage. What we don’t want is to see it destroyed by acidic emissions from Woodside.” #auspol

Amazing. So hoomans were in North America much longer than previously thought. And at the time of last glacial maximum! ❄️ We reckon there is still more to discover.
We have the Murujuga rock art landscape in North west Australia made by our First Nation people ❤️💛🖤 with petroglyphs that stretch back 50,O00 years, of indigenous songlines, but now pursuit of fossil fuels is destroying them. 😢 #NorthWestShelf
BREAKING: Petrina's Emergency Defence trial begins at Perth Magistrates Court.
Petrina pled not guilty after blocking the road leading into Woodside's Burrup Hub with a boat in 2024, on the grounds that her actions were in proportion to the emergency created by Woodside's emissions.
Her trial begins today, which could serve to achieve climate protest rights in Western Australia.
Outside court this morning, Petrina said:
"Woodside's emissions are directly putting us in danger, destroying climate and culture, and we should have the right to stop it.
We only have people power, so that's why I'm here on trial today."
Support Petrina by staying tuned as her trial plays out, and donating to Disrupt Burrup Hub for legal costs.

Climate activist, @disrupt_burrup_hub campaigner and @socialistallianceoz member Petrina Harley outside the Perth Magistrates Court this morning ahead of her landmark trial to fight charges after courageously blocking the one road leading in and out of the Woodside’s Burrup Hub last year.
Petrina will plead the emergency defence before Perth Magistrates Court, and if found not guilty will secure the legal right to climate protest in Western Australia.
Disrupt Burrup Hub said: “The emergency defence argues that a person who broke the law did so in proportion to a legitimate emergency.
“In this case the emergency is clear: the climate crisis is here, and Woodside’s Burrup Hub —the biggest fossil fuel project in the Southern Hemisphere — IS contributing to climate-related deaths with no end in sight.”

I caught up with Australia at #UNOC3 #Oceans conference overnight. Australia's Federal Environment Minister Murray Watt has been busy talking a big game on ocean conservation. But there is an essential hypocrisy here with approval of #NorthWestShelf #FossilFuels Climate 💣.

Here we are yesterday outside Labor MP Peter Khalil’s office in Coburg on the 2nd week of a Tuesday vigil to phase out Fossil Fuels. Keep tooting people. We look forward to when we can just enjoy the local Dog parks rather than sit outside an MP office every week. Labor says they do climate action while approving new coal and gas like North West Shelf extension that will cause 4.3 billion tonnes of climate pollution. That is a climate 💣

<<…the Australian government continues to push fossil fuels with the zeal of a drug lord. They brush aside resistance at the supply end, weaken resolve at the demand end, and keep state and territory governments hooked on the money.
Woodside’s motives are clear: keep their shareholders happy. But what’s the government’s excuse? More than 80 per cent of Australia’s gas is exported, most of it royalty-free. Japan, our largest buyer, sells more gas to other countries than it imports from Australia.
The biggest domestic user of Australian gas is the gas industry itself, powering facilities that exist only to serve offshore markets. This isn’t just wasteful – it’s unfair. Australians don’t see the benefits but we bear the climate costs. Despite employing relatively few people and paying little tax, the gas industry holds an unhealthy level of control over government decision-making. It’s undemocratic. Policy is being written for the benefit of gas gougers, not Australians… >>
The polluting impact of fossil fuels is not new to those who peddle them. Nearly 30 years ago, when I was an executive at BP, we acknowledged climate change and what it would bring – despite others in the industry crying foul. We knew then what many fossil fuel companies still pretend not to: burning coal, oil and gas would overheat our planet and fuel more extreme, more destructive weather.
