È un Gennaro Gattuso delusissimo, con le lacrime agli occhi, quello visto ai microfoni Rai pochi minuti dopo l’eliminazione dell’Italia, che non parteciperà al Mondiale per la terza edizione consecutiva. 2018, 2022 e 2026: l’ultimo Mondiale giocato dagli Azzurri risale ormai a 12 anni fa. Svezia, Macedonia del Nord e adesso la Bosnia, che ha eliminato gli Azzurri ai calci di rigore dopo l’1-1 al termine dei tempi supplementari.
“Una mazzata così è difficile da digerire”, ha proseguito il commissario tecnico della Nazionale. “Non voglio parlare di niente. A volte ho gioito, a volte ho preso mazzate ma questa è difficile da digerire. I ragazzi hanno sorpreso anche me per il cuore, per l’attaccamento che ci hanno messo. Per l’ennesima volta non andiamo al Mondiale. Chiedo scusa perché non ce l’ho fatta, ma i ragazzi mi hanno impressionato. Ci teniamo la prestazione qua, ma fa male. Dispiace”, ha concluso il commissario tecnico.
Deluso anche Leonardo Spinazzola, tra i giocatori a “fine corso” della Nazionale. “Ancora non ci credo, siamo usciti. Farlo in questo modo dopo 90 minuti in 10 è brutto, stavamo resistendo con i denti. Potevamo fare 3/4 gol che potevano chiudere la partita, è un gran dispiacere. Per tutti. Per noi, per tutti i bambini che non vedranno un altro Mondiale. Mi dispiace vedere i giovani che piangono, ma in futuro avranno tante chance”, ha dichiarato l’esterno del Napoli nel post gara. “Sono episodi, sapevamo che in 10 sarebbe stato molto difficile. Ma abbiamo avuto 3/4 occasioni buone, è inutile parlare. Il dispiacere è veramente enorme. Per me era l’ultima chance, ma mi dispiace per tutta l’Italia”.
