"The 100-acre Negutaquet Conservation Area has fields, a trail along the small, sparkling Negutaquet River, long stone walls, and an old family cemetery. A huge double oak tree excites some visitors! The Great Works Regional Land Trust protects this lovely spot, which offers several ways to explore diverse forests — some with very old trees — and meadows. Some of the trails, especially around the oval in the middle of the preserve, are particularly wide, level, and easy to walk. The rest of the trails also tend to be easy.

"Additionally, this preserve is connected to the 60-acre Maple Street Conservation Area and Town Forest via a long, sturdy bridge and 0.75-mile trail. (The connecting trail is not open to pets.)"

More about #BaunegBeg ! The name comes from the #Wabanaki word #Bannebeaugue, which means “spread out” and “still water.”

"Bauneg Beg Conservation Area in North Berwick includes 89 acres of deciduous forest land surrounding the 866-foot, three-peaked Bauneg Beg Mountain. The land was acquired by Great Works Regional Land Trust in three parts over the course of seven months in 2000 and 2001.

The 0.65-mile trail winds through a deciduous forest, a pine grove and a section of large boulders described as "Devil's Den" before reaching the highest of the three peaks. Trail forks just before the summit with a choice of routes to the top. Easier trail veers to the right.

Rocky outcroppings offer views of nearby Mount Hope, parts of south Sanford and, according to Great Works Regional Land Trust, on a clear day, Mount Washington to the northwest and the Atlantic Ocean to the southeast."

Ooooh... I've always wanted to hike nearby Bauneg Beg, but there wasn't any parking (one used to have to park on the side of the road). It seems that has changed, so I'll be adding #BaunegBeg to my hiking list (along with #MountAgamenticus). While I'd love to travel further away (like the White Mountains or my old stomping grounds back in Massachusetts), I'm really not liking driving too far these days. And yes, I still have plenty to explore without having to drive anywhere, but I would like to get to at least one high spot this year!

Parks in #YarmouthME, #NorthBerwickME will share $500K in federal funding

"Maine will receive $542,805 in federal funding to expand outdoor recreation opportunities at two sites.

"The town of Yarmouth is receiving $361,830 to make significant renovations at Royal River Park, and the town of North Berwick is receiving $180,975 to create a recreation area at Bauneg Beg Mountain South.

"The town of North Berwick will receive $180,975 to acquire and develop 60.8 acres of property for recreation on Bauneg Beg Mountain South. Upcoming projects include a gravel parking area, signage and informational kiosk and new trails.

"The area lies on the northern tip of North Berwick, consisting of 89 wooded acres of trails, rock formations and a panoramic view, according to Great Works Regional Land Trust.

"Bauneg Beg is an 'elusive' mountain, seen only from a distance and in certain weather conditions. It has a few steep steps at the top, but is otherwise manageable for just about anyone and is considered an excellent family hiking spot in all seasons.

"Bauneg Beg Mountain has three peaks, the highest of which is 866 feet – higher than Mt. Agamenticus. The peaks can be seen from the Atlantic Ocean and have been used by mariners navigating the Maine coast. The mountain is the only one in southern Maine that does not have a radio tower.

"Great Works permanently conserved the property in 2001."

AUGUSTA, Maine — "Summer has arrived in Maine, bringing rising temperatures and longer days. But when the heat becomes dangerous or oppressive, community cooling centers help support those who need an escape from the heat and humidity.

"The centers are often located in public spaces, such as recreation centers or libraries. They typically open for short-term purposes.

"While the primary purpose is to save lives by getting people out of potentially dangerous heat conditions, cooling centers may also provide charging stations, showers, or food.

"The latest listings for cooling centers are on the Maine Emergency Management Agency's [#MEMA] website. We've included a roundup here as well as additional resources to help you stay safe this summer when temperatures rise.
