Man muss schon ein sehr selektives ­Gedächtnis haben, um die Entführung von ­Präsident ­Nicolás Maduro und seiner Frau ­Cilia Flores aus Venezuela als „Rückkehr“ Washingtons zu einer „imperialistischen“ Politik zu bezeichnen, welche die USA seit 1945, wenn nicht gar seit 1918 nicht mehr praktiziert hätten.

Seit dem Ende des Kalten Kriegs sprechen allein die Operationen unter der US-Präsidentschaft von ­George H. W. Bush (1989-1993) für sich.

Wieso wird eigentlich Noriega mit keinem Wort erwähnt, wenn es um die Verschleppung von Maduro geht? Ich sehe da durchaus eine gewisse Kontinuität.

Möchte wegen der verständlichen Sorgen, aber auch wegen des bisweilen selbstgerechten #Thymos zur Entführung von Präsident #Maduro aus #Venezuela an #Geschichte erinnern: Schon zum Jahreswechsel 1989/90 griffen die #USA in #Panama an und entführten den dortigen Präsidenten #Noriega.

Dennoch behielt auch damals #Europa den Import fossiler #Gewaltenergien , den Einkauf US-amerikanische Hard- & #Software & niedrige Verteidigungsausgaben bei. Auch deswegen sieht #Trump die #EU als schwach.

Ganz neu ist der US-Angriff auf #Venezuela samt Gefangennahme von #Maduro zum Jahreswechsel 2025/26 nun auch nicht. Zum Jahreswechsel 1989/90 griffen US-Forces #Panama an und nahmen den dortigen Präsidenten #Noriega fest. #Maduro’s kidnapping is clearly illegal under both international law and U.S. law. One option for the U.S. would be to obtain “retroactive consent” by quickly recognizing a transitional government that “requests” extradition, thereby converting a kidnapping into a cooperative transfer.

The timing appears intentional—the #Noriega precedent in #Panama might be invoked as justification, even though that precedent itself was legally contested and internationally condemned. While the kidnapping is almost universally viewed as unlawful, Washington will rely on creative legal fiction, or more realistically, geopolitical impunity, to proceed.

The UK has already shown total disregard for international law in its reaction to #Israel’s genocidal assault on #Gaza—continuing arms sales despite the #ICJ’s rulings on plausible genocide and the #ICC’s arrest warrants for Israeli leaders for war crimes and crimes against humanity. Now the UK remains silent on the kidnapping of Maduro. It’s notable that the #UK was not involved (unlike the 1953 forced regime change for oil access which installed the Shah in Iran), but why isn’t Starmer condemning #Trump now?
