Good morning from the Nordic Slavists' conference! First talk concerns grafitti from a monastery active around 600–1200 Common Era. They have inscriptions in Greek, Latin, Old Church Slavonic and … something else? Or is it just fancy letters from all over? Asemic writing as in Dermisaches work? In the picture it appears above the pentagram star.
Any ideas?

The history of reading in Europe has definitely had a western bias, but the project De-centering the History of Reading gives a more Central European empirical focus from the Czech Lands, all the way back to 1750. One article (in EN) from the project here:

More interesting talks at #NordSlav25 , when Laura Janda presents her co-authored project on keymorph analysis. Putin talked about both Ukraine and NATO in his official speeches in 2022 and 2023, but in 2024, they are completely absent!

And now for the Pseudo-Germanisms in some Slavic languages. An under-studied subject, compared to Pseudo Anglicisms! This is when a word has been borrowed into a language, where the meaning then has changed.
Examples: Čus borrowed from Tschüss, means "hi!" in CS, but "bye!" in DE, or ancug borrowed from DE Anzug, means sportswear in SR but "suit" in DE.
