The way we Jews describe ourselves in English, a People, an Ethnicity, a civilization, is largely based on the way that Mordechai Kaplan and his reconstructionist colleagues addressed the issue of both the language and goals of Jewish identity in the US (and disapora at large). He cared about Jewish cohesion, Jewish unity, and Jewish goals in the diaspora while still being connected to, and working together with the Zionist movement to create a larger vision for Zionism than just a nation state.
