Things have been so insane that I have not posted any photos from the Iditarod! First of all, the race started in Fairbanks because there is literally no snow in Anchorage or South Central. The lead teams should be crossing the finish line (under the burled arch) in Nome at the first of next week. Here's the End of the Iditarod Arch that arrived in Nome today and is being put together so it will make it to Front St. in Nome this weekend for sled teams to run under it next week. Christmas bird count today in 20 deg.F. and 40+ mph blowing winds (blowing snow and dust). My team of 2 people:
4 King Eider
3 Common Eider
25 Eider species (unidentified)
1 Northern Shrike
113 Common Raven
1 American Dipper
2 Snow Bunting
7 McKay's Buntings
20 Buntings species (snows and Mckay's, assume - in flight)

Others got some willow ptarmigan, Downy Woodpeckers, Black Capped Chickadees, and still awaiting all reports. Birds were hunkered down in winds.

A friend recently went to Nome, Alaska where I used to live back in the late 90s. Some great photos. I do miss living here.

@AlaskaWx @Climatologist49 This pic was from 2021, but we're approaching it again. This is a neighbor's house. That danged wind. Also hate to see the potential rain. #nomealaska #alaska
When I first moved to Nome, #Alaska back in 1998 from North Carolina, my friends/family asked weird questions like do "they" live in igloos? Will you have electricity? Will you have running water? The answer is a resounding no to the first one and depending on your preference, yes or no to the second. My father asked about igloos so during the 1999 Iditarod, locals built an "igloo" and I took pics, sent them to my dad and said yes, this is where I live. 😊 πŸ€ͺ

Ira Orton house #nomealaska 2004 [built 1904]
Ira Orton house in #nomealaska built 1904. Couldn't find the date on this #libraryofcongress photo but it's obviously from the '70s. Visited Nome in 2004 and photographed this house and some others from the turn of the 20th century. This house is on Front St. and wondering how it fared in the storm earlier this year that had a lot of coastal flooding.
