Hoher Ifen (2023)

One of the most unique and geologically interesting and layered mountains in the Northern Alps, including the extremely karst Gottesacker (aka God's Acre, aka Cemetery) plateau with deep caves... one of the areas I'm hoping to explore further this year...

New UV lamp, new developer handling & my largest Kallitype print so far (~10x7 inch) — a shot of the iconic Oeschinensee cirque, surrounded by 3500+ meter mountains...

The new light setup is ~10x slower than my other light box, but allows me to do much larger prints in the future. The developer is chemically still the same, but now heated to 40℃. The photo is originally from an old iPhone 6.

The negative needs some more tweaking to increase contrast and maybe another minute or two of longer exposure...

Really excited to be doing larger prints (next step is double size 11x15 inch), giving those fragile mountain landscapes much more presence in person and this old photo process emphasizing their timeless character...

Tectonic Wall

A pretty famous geotope in the Allgäuer Alps with extreme folds and layering. The hundreds of meters thick top layer of mostly Dolomite belongs to the Lech valley thrust sheet (215 million years old) which got pushed above the Allgäu sheet below (190 million years old, here mostly covered by overgrown talus fields) and Radiolarite from the Ruhpolding formation even further below (160 million years old and originally 2000 meter below sea level — hard to imagine!).

Early morning in Ötztal

Höllental ❤️

(Named after the hellish canyon section at the bottom of this most amazing valley, a section with tunnels and waterfalls which made the valley impassible during winter months (even still now) and the only way in & out is via a very narrow path along the rocks higher up...)

Morteratsch and the majestic Bernina range in full glory 🤩

Yes! That's what I'm talking about... Reprint was successful and much improved! Tweaked negative, new developer mix & weaker toner for more neutral grays. Also built an interim solution/contraption (involving 6kg of books as weight) to ensure the contact print is sharp everywhere...

As for the scene in the image: These are the highest mountains of the central eastern Alps (Piz Bernina on the right is 4048m, the others are all similar). Alone the last vertical ice fall section is ~1000 meters tall... Yet these glaciers are losing length & volume quickly (between 10-30 meters every year, trend accelerating...) The moraine line (approx. 200 meters above the valley bottom, on the left slope, shows the previous volume of the main glacier, which already has lost over 3km in length over the past century 😢

Share not only your successes but also your failures, they say... Latest 8x6" kallitype of my beloved friend Morteratsch. Printed before breakfast this AM...

It might not be immediately obvious in the thumbnail, but this is a good illustration of what happens if there's not enough weight/pressure applied when creating contact prints (and why I'm impatiently waiting for my heavy glass plate to arrive)... I almost do kinda like these blurred areas creating some weird irregular tilt-shift effect, guiding the eye toward the main ice fall section in the center... Still, quality control demands a reprint is much needed! 😅
