Sonic Youth (1982)

This record came out of nowhere for me and I’m trying to understand why. For the longest time, I thought “Confusion Is Sex” was Sonic Youth’s first record and I somehow didn’t know their actual debut self-titled album even existed until the early 2000s when it was reissued on the band’s own label. It’s an incredible record. It’s SY’s spooky, discordant take on dancey, bass driven, post-punk which is like my favorite style of punk music. Anyway, whenever I listen to this record I just think about how happy and shocked I was when I first heard it.

Teenage Jesus and the Jerks “Shut Up and Bleed” (compilation reissue 2008)

Haven’t listened to Queen Lydia in far too long. I love how she was always like “I don’t play punk music.” The genres appeared around the same time, but no wave was its own thing—another kind of musical deconstruction, more experimental than most punk, almost like free jazz but less technical. There was also this sense of horror in the music of Lydia Lunch, early Sonic Youth and Hole. Bloody, bruised, shrieking, left to die. So intense!
