someone here mentioned #Watching the movie #GoodNightAndGoodLuck which looks at US media responses to #McCarthyism

i found it on itunes cheap, and was fair salivating about how good it looked … but haven’t a clue what anyone was saying when i tried to watch it, cos there are #NoSubtitles. and it’s typical of the era - heavy on dialogue.

i assume the producers were as interested in presenting an important story as they were an entertaining one, but without subtitles this is a big fail, no matter how pretty george clooney and others are.

i’m a person with good hearing, but there are actually many hearing people, like myself, who can’t absorb much by ear. i know i’m not the only hearing person who relies on subtitles. after 5 minutes everything just SOUNDS like blub blub blub blub blub. and i would expect non-hearing people deserve as much consideration as the rest of us.

on the plus side, the portion of this movie i tried to follow - before giving up - does not have sudden, painfully loud sound effects or loud soundtrack music.

An interesting start #JoannaLumley #SpiceTrail learning about nutmegs, the Dutch, swapping an island so the British gained New Amsterdam & then on to Jakarta and smoking clove cigarettes #ITV #TV #NoSubtitles

Here's my brief #nosubtitles #amateurmoviereview (edit: no specific spoilers included but there are some real-life location names)

I enjoyed Suzume. I probably only fully understood about half the dialogue though - a lot of detail about why/what was ACTUALLY happening was too fast or just outright unfamiliar words.

I love the character interactions in Shinkai's more recent films and in this one it was really interesting to see her set out and meet/help/work with the various other people.

The animation and style is always just gorgeous. I particularly love the visual style of his films and they just keep getting better. It's pretty much signature at this point. It was fun seeing the trip to Ehime, Shin-Kobe, and points forward ("Hey, I'm going to be in Shin-Kobe later today!"). The scenes set in Ochanomizu were similar! (Cue Jurassic Park: "I know this!"). I've spent a LOT of time walking around Ochanomizu haha.

Music was... understated? I guess? Everything fit well, but it didn't seem as integral to the movie as Your Name where particular melodies/sounds were more evocative of certain things.

There are a couple of things regarding names/exclamations/etc, that I'm looking forward to seeing how the localization handles. Obviously I'm going to go see it again in the US and I'll likely drag my mom along as well (She enjoyed Your Name when I took her to that).
