A rally against job losses at the University of Brighton will take place on 24 July after 23 academic staff were issued with compulsory redundancy notices.
Eighty staff have already accepted voluntary redundancy rather than face being sacked. UCU members at Brighton are on indefinite strike, fighting to stop the cuts to subjects including art, literature, education, acute care & nursing, engineering, and sport science.
UCU members at the University of East Anglia will strike tomorrow over the continued threat of redundancy faced by more than 100 staff. Cuts are being forced through due to a multi-million pound deficit.
At a recent all-staff meeting in the arts & humanities department the vice-chancellor admitted that efforts to close the deficit have already led to 400 jobs being axed, accounting for over 10% of UEA's former workforce.
Our request to extend the contracts to allow for further talks was refused.
Unite again expressed our willingness to engage in further consultation so as to avoid our members’ redundancies.
It's 19 working days until the first #PGRsAsStaff redundancy.

After considerable delay we've now met with the employer over the two #PGRsAsStaff redundancies.
Unfortunately we were simply told the project is ending. Although we were also told there will be a smaller and as yet undefined role to take the project forward. 🤔

Our campaign to save the #PGRsAsStaff jobs continues. We will now contact Unite head office over running a statutory ballot but remain hopeful that it's not necessary.

Busy week. Our consultative ballot on #NoRedundancies is still LIVE #VoteYes🚀
Further updates will be provided to members next week on steps we are taking to resolve our other live issues:

ACAS talks
HSE complaint
Hybrid working
Regrettably the redundancy notices issued to our two members who lead UCU's #PGRsAsStaff campaign leads have not, as of this evening, been withdrawn. We were left with no option but to open our consultative ballot on taking action. We urge members to vote yes.
