#Trump has undermined the agency tasked with making sure America never has another #nuclear meltdown

By Ella Nilsen, Updated Mar 10, 2026

"The federal regulatory agency tasked with keeping America’s #NuclearPower plants safe and running smoothly is set to make huge cuts to the amount of time its staffers spend on #safety and emergency #inspections, opening the door to more self-policing from the industry.

"As it embarks on a reorganization to fulfill executive orders from President Donald Trump, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission [#NRC] is proposing to dramatically reduce its inspection hours for existing #NuclearPowerPlants, cutting back on the amount of time independent inspectors look for plants’ security procedures, #radiation protection for staff, #maintenance and safety.

"The NRC has been a crucial part of keeping America’s nuclear energy operating for the past 40 years — and experts say its authority is only more necessary than ever as the Trump administration seeks to usher in a new golden age of nuclear energy. But Trump wants to streamline the agency, and staff cuts combined with executive orders are troubling signs that Trump is undoing the NRC’s independence, experts said."

"Critics, however, worry that the tight July 4 deadline, political pressure and a lack of transparency are all compromising safety. Even a 'small' release of #radioactive material could cause damage to #people and the #environment around the test sites.

"This is not normal, and this is not OK, and this is not going to lead to success," warned #AllisonMacfarlane, a professor at the University of British Columbia who served as chairman of the #NRC under President Barack Obama. 'This is how to have an accident.' "

Japan Is Restarting Its #NuclearPower Program 15 Years After the #Fukushima Disaster

One of the surviving reactors at the #KashiwazakiKariwa plant was loaded with fuel last summer and recently turned back on, to mixed reactions.

By Elizabeth Rayne, Published: Jan 28, 2026

Excerpt: "Despite the benefits [sic] of nuclear energy, not everyone is so sure about this move. The Japanese government’s strategic energy plan previously intended to reduce the use of nuclear power as much as possible, but as far back as 2021, it has been focused on incorporating nuclear back into its bank of power sources as a way to reduce the consumption of fossil fuels. Its newest plan addresses the progress that has been made since the Fukushima disaster, admitting that the power plant failed to make improvements because of 'the myth [that] created the impression that meeting the standards and conditions set by the government and industry would eliminate all risks.'

"Some citizens see the return to nuclear power as a dismissal of caution."

"TEPCO recently reported that a thermometer in #FukushimaDaiichi’s Reactor 1 recorded an unexpected 80°C temperature increase following nitrogen injection into the primary containment vessel (#PCV). Initially, this raised concerns about a possible heat source inside the containment vessel .

"However, after an internal review, TEPCO concluded that the reading did not reflect an actual temperature increase, attributing it to instrument malfunction. As a result, they downgraded multiple thermometers to “reference use” and removed them from official monitoring .

TOKYO (AP) — "Japan’s #nuclear watchdog said Wednesday it is scrapping the safety screening for two reactors at the #HamaokaNuclearPowerPlant in central Japan, after its operator was found to have fabricated data about #earthquake risks.

"It was a setback to Japan’s attempts to accelerate nuclear reactor restarts. Less than a quarter of commercial nuclear reactors are operational in the wake of the 2011 #FukushimaDaiichi meltdowns, but rising energy costs and pressure to reduce carbon emissions have pushed the government to prioritize nuclear power.

"#ChubuElectricPowerCo. had applied for safety screening to resume operations at the No. 3 and 4 reactors at the Hamaoka plant in 2014 and 2015. Two other reactors at the plant are being decommissioned, and a fifth is idle.

"The plant, about 200 kilometers (125 miles) west of #Tokyo, is located on a coastal area known for potential risks from so-called #NankaiTrough #megaquakes."

Japanese watchdog halts nuclear reactor review over faulty seismic data

Japan's nuclear watchdog is scrapping the safety screening for two reactors at the Hamaoka nuclear power plant. The operator, Chubu Electric Power Co., was found to have fabricated data about earthquake risks. It was a setback for Japan's efforts to restart nuclear reactors. Less than a quarter of commercial reactors are operational following the 2011 Fukushima disaster. The Nuclear Regulation Authority began an investigation last February after a whistleblower's tip. The regulator confirmed the falsification and suspended the screening. Public opinion remains divided due to lingering safety concerns after Fukushima.

TOKYO (AP) — "A reactor at the world’s largest nuclear power plant that restarted for the first time since the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disaster is now being shut down again Thursday due to a glitch that occurred hours after the unit’s resumption, its operator said.

"The No. 6 reactor at the #KashiwazakiKariwa plant in north-central Japan reactivated Wednesday night for the first time in 14 years, as plant workers started removing neutron-absorbing control rods from the core to start stable nuclear fission.

"But the process had to be suspended hours later due to a malfunction related to control rods, which are essential to safely starting up and shutting down reactors, the Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings said.

"TEPCO, which also manages the wrecked Fukushima plant, said there was no safety issue from the glitch."

Two years after the release of treated water at the #FukushimaDaiichi #nuclear power plant began, more than a hundred thousand tons were washed into the sea, but new #contaminated water is occurring every day

August 24, 2025 at 06:00

"It has been two years since the ocean release of treated water accumulated at the #TEPCO’s Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant began. The radioactive substance #tritium remains in the water even after the purification process. In June, China, which completely stopped importing Japanese seafood, resumed production in 37 prefectures, but Fukushima and other ten prefectures are still not eligible. There is no end to the ocean release, and the impact of the nuclear accident on the fishing industry continues.

"Tank treated water and contaminated water have been reduced by only fifty-six thousand tons.

"The ocean release was first released on August 24th, and the 14th time was launched on August 7th this month. Up to the 13th time, a total of one hundred and eighty-seven tons of treated water were released.

"The treated water and contaminated water stored in a tank on the site of the nuclear power plant before it was released into the ocean. So far, it has decreased to about fifty-six thousand tons, and it has not decreased by much the amount of release. The reason is that the contaminated water is generated about seventy tons every day, and the number of groundwater and rainwater increases due to the contact of molten nuclear fuel (debris) in the reactor building. Without the absence of contaminated water, we cannot stop releasing it into the ocean.

"As of July 30th, TEPCO paid about JPY790 billion in compensation in response to the slump in fish prices associated with ocean release. There is a possibility that some of China's resumption of imports will also change the price of fish, but Fukushima Prefecture continues to be stopped.

"37 Export application procedures for fishery products produced in Hokkaido Prefecture have begun. A person in charge of the processing and distribution section of the Fisheries Agency said, 'There are many applications, and the desire to resume is strong. We will continue to work with China to reopen the ten prefectures.' Riki Arai)

"The place where the 'sludge' due to the treatment of contaminated water is about to be full.

"Two years have passed since the release of treated water into the ocean due to the TEPCO’s Fukushima Daiichi nuclear accident. The treated water stored in the nuclear power plant is gradually reduced by ocean release, while the storage and disposal of sludge contaminated with high concentrations that continue to occur in the process of treatment of contaminated water is becoming an issue.

"In the process of removing radioactive substances from contaminated water, sludge is produced by precipitating impurities with chemicals. Liquids and solids are mixed... " [Unfortunately, the rest is behind paywall]

2030 Doomsday Scenario: The Great #Nuclear Collapse

A timeline of the #EndGame for human civilization

"Humanity has constructed a doomsday Deadman switch that threatens civilization. Climate destruction will make it increasingly difficult to avoid the looming global nuclear catastrophe we've created.

"Here's how our future might unravel:
Late 2020s: Climate Red Alert and Infrastructure Strain

"By the late 2020s, Earth’s climate is in unprecedented turmoil. Global average temperatures are consistently 1.5 °C above pre-industrial levels. Each year brings record-breaking heatwaves, “freak” floods, and droughts that batter infrastructure. Coastal cities flood more frequently, roads buckle in extreme heat, and power grids strain under surging demand for cooling.

"This cascade of climate disasters sets the stage for a systemic collapse: as societies grapple with runaway warming, the resilience of #Criticalnfrastructure (power, water, transit) erodes.

"Energy systems enter a crisis even before 2030. Nuclear power, which in 2025 still provided about 9% of the world’s electricity from ~440 reactors, becomes increasingly unreliable. Many nuclear plants struggle with climate stresses: cooling water sources heat up in summer, forcing reactors to reduce output or shut down to avoid unsafe temperatures. For example, a 2028 European #heatwave pushes river and sea temperatures above 25 °C, triggering emergency shutdowns at multiple reactors that cannot be cooled effectively.

"At the same time, stronger storms and floods threaten reactor safety. Dozens of reactors worldwide are unprepared for #ExtremeFlooding, meaning a dam failure or #StormSurge could lead to a Fukushima-scale accident. Worrisome reports emerge of power plants in #floodplains and #coasts where defenses are overtopped by #RisingSeas and torrential rains.

"By 2029, global carbon output remains high, and natural feedback loops are kicking in. In the Arctic, permafrost thaws and releases methane creating a vicious warming cycle where initial warming triggers more emissions, leading to even more warming. Scientists caution that a tipping point is near, beyond which climate change becomes self-perpetuating (a true “runaway” scenario).

"Society approaches 2030 in a precarious state: aware of looming catastrophe yet unprepared for its speed. The stage is set for the coming collapse, with power grids and nuclear facilities - the backbone of the industrial world - already under severe strain.

Early 2030s: Blackouts and the First Reactor Crises

"2030 marks the breaking point.

"A confluence of climate catastrophes collapses power grids across multiple continents. A severe global heatwave in the summer of 2030 brings record electricity demand while many power plants (nuclear and coal alike) are derated or offline due to overheating coolant water.

"Then powerful Category 5 storms strike in succession: one hurricane inundates the U.S. Eastern seaboard, while an unprecedented typhoon swamps Southeast Asia. These #disasters knock out transmission lines and flood key substations, leading to prolonged blackouts in dozens of major cities. Emergency systems are overwhelmed. With communications down and transportation paralyzed, manpower shortages become acute - many operators and engineers cannot reach their stations.

"Nuclear power plants are among the first to feel the emergency. Grid failure triggers automatic reactor SCRAMs (rapid shutdowns) at plants from Florida to France. Control rods halt the fission reactions, but decay heat in reactor cores still needs cooling for days to prevent meltdown.

"Normally, backup diesel generators would power the cooling pumps, but the scale of the #blackout means diesel resupply is uncertain and some generators fail in flooded facilities. In a grim reflection of 2011’s Fukushima disaster, several coastal reactors lose all power as storm surges drown their backup generators.

"Within hours to days, the first meltdowns occur.

"In 2031, a reactor in South Asia becomes a flashpoint: its cooling pumps falter after the grid collapse, leading the core to overheat. The reactor’s heart melts through containment in a matter of days, releasing a plume of radioactive steam and debris.

"Nearby, an even greater danger unfolds: the plant’s spent fuel pool, packed with years of highly radioactive spent rods, boils dry without cooling. Exposed to air, the zirconium cladding of the fuel ignites, triggering a fire that belches long-lived radioisotopes directly into the atmosphere. This nightmare scenario - once narrowly avoided at #Fukushima by heroic ad-hoc measures - now plays out in full."

Chance of Japan's #NankaiTrough #megaquake raised to 80%: government panel

KYODO NEWS KYODO NEWS - Jan 16, 2025

"The chance of a megaquake occurring in the Nankai Trough within the next 30 years has increased to approximately 80 percent, the government's earthquake investigation panel said Wednesday.

"Recalculations are made every January, taking into account the passage of time. The probability of a magnitude 8 to 9 quake along the trough in the Pacific had previously been estimated at 70 to 80 percent since 2018.

"Noting that M6.0-level quakes have repeatedly occurred in Japan since the temblor on the Noto Peninsula, central Japan, on Jan. 1, 2024, the panel's chairman Naoshi Hirata, professor emeritus at the University of Tokyo, emphasized the need for continued vigilance as active seismic activity will likely continue for a while.

"Such seismic activity has not been observed in Japan before, making 'it difficult to predict when it might subside,' Hirata said.

"Earlier this week, the Japan Meteorological Agency issued its second-ever Nankai Trough Extra Information after an earthquake of magnitude of 6.6 struck southwestern Japan.

"But while the jolting occurred beneath the western edge of the hypothesized epicenter of a Nankai Trough quake, the agency did not issue a special alert as it was not deemed to have immediately raised the risk of a megaquake."

In #Japan, fears mount of a massive 2011-style earthquake on disaster anniversary

Scientists warn seismic energy accumulating under the #ChishimaTrench off #Hokkaido has the potential to trigger a magnitude-8.8 earthquake

by Julian Ryall
Updated: 9:48am, 11 Mar 2025

"As Japan marks the anniversary of the earthquake and tsunami that devastated large areas of the country’s northeast in 2011, experts have warned that the seismic conditions in an underwater trench off Hokkaido hint at another powerful tremor.

"A five-year study of the Chishima Trench, which runs parallel to the east coast of Hokkaido about 150km (93 miles) offshore, has determined that the two plates are not slipping past each other. Instead, sections of the plates appear to be joined together but that when they do inevitably break free, a huge amount of seismic energy will be unleashed.

"Experts at the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology have been studying the trench with scientists from Tohoku University and Hokkaido University and believe the plates may have been fused together since the last major earthquake in the region in the 17th century.

"A separate report released by the government has stated that the likelihood of a quake with a magnitude of at least 8.8 in the trench within the next 30 years stands at between 7 per cent and 40 per cent.

"That might sound like an inexact likelihood and timescale, said Fumiaki Tomita, assistant professor at Tohoku University’s research centre for the prediction of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions, but he pointed out that predicting seismic activity was notoriously difficult."
