# Nixie, Now Combustible!

We're making the first "proper" release of Nixie, our open-source, self-hostable, minimal visit-counter for your websites :)

Since we first posted about it,
@nelson has added a whole histogram! You can view now over time how your views increase! Number go up!!!

Nelson also wrote a blogpost about the making of Nixie, the challenges he faced during it, and its design decisions, be sure to check it out!

How many different cathodes would one need to make a Nixie tube capable of displaying all of the Stargate glyphs?

The museum has very graciously received a #Philips PM6620 counter, one of the very few Philips instruments to use #nixie tubes.

As well as a #HP 182T display with 8558B spectrum analyzer and a HP5304A counter.

Should you have user, service manuals or schematics for any of these they'd be greatly appreciated! Especially the PM6620 seems very difficult to find.

The HP8558B needs repairs specifically its RBW does not work very well, if you know common faults / repairs let me know.

And finally, assuming that other piece hasn't been published in the last few minutes, a look at a neat project which reads out a motorbike's selected gear from the OBD port.

...except the OBD doesn't report that. So it gets *clever*. Oh, and it displays it on a vintage #Nixie tube, because why not?

A Self-Learning Microcontroller Delivers Motorcycle Gear Indication — On a Vintage Nixie Tube

A Bluetooth link to the bike's OBD port and some clever calculations provide a best-guess of the currently-engaged gear.

Back in 2011 I was working my first job and I bought a #nixie tube clock kit from Velleman, it was a great learning experience and fun to get access to real nixie tubes, sadly I didn't buy or make a case for it, and when I brought it to work to show it off, I touched the high voltage power rails for the tubes which caused my arm to spasm and fling the clock on the floor which broke it.

Since the tubes seamed to be whole, I kept it for 14 years in a box full of other stuff, but this year me and my dad took a look at it to see if we could fix it.

My dad is a much better electronics engineer than I am and he figured out the issue and got it working, and for my birthday he presented me with this gorgeous case made out of a piece of wood complete with rerouted electrical connections and control switch.

I love it, we both built it and I am soo happy for it!

Bummer. Got a bunch of these nixies and about half have some missing digits that do this. Trying to scrounge enough to send some to a fellow Tektronix nerd in Germany.
Some of them have digits that just do this and don’t fire at all, while some others have one or two digits that won’t fire unless you jump from an adjacent digit with a little bit of overlap where they’re both on.
I know they had a bit of radioactive magic in them to help them fire, which I assume has decayed beyond helpful at this point.

This is a Sepia composition of my Raspberry Pi5 SBC.

Without even having used the GPIO yet, the machine has brought a lot of Joy to me, already.
I'm studying the deluge of projects boards / breakouts available for the GPIO, so that I can choose what I want to do first, after which I will go of course for those beautiful tube driven clocks. Of course I'm referring to the Nixie tubes.

I am reading up on Nixie tubes for a very nice and interesting Raspberry Pi interfacing project

What I want to achieve is literally controlling the high voltage / current tubes through bridging Hardware with my SBC Raspberry Pie5
