No.801: Nightmare City (aka City Of The Walking Dead, aka Zombi 3, aka Incubo sulla città contaminata) is another Spanish/Italian zombie flick from 1980. This one was directed by gorelord Umberto Lenzi (Spasmo, Cannibal Ferox) and the last time I saw it (almost twenty years ago) I wasn't exactly overawed. And now?
Plotwise: A TV journalist witnesses an outbreak of crazed violence at an airport. Forbidden from covering the story, he quits and continues investigating but soon violence is erupting everywhere, with rotting blood-drinking killers running amok.
While it's debatable whether this is actually a zombie movie, what's certain is that it's a very disjointed experience, hamstrung by some very poor make-up effects. On the plus side it was clearly made on a decent budget and features an incredible amount of visceral violence. Lenzi is a good director and has a feeling for the strange and unsettling. The critics loathed it, but it's as good a horror movie as any to come out of Italy in the 80s.

Nightmare City (1980)

Nightmare City is a schlocky classic that Umberto Lenzi handles beautifully with gore, sleaze and just a little fear-mongering.
